Andrew Murray Wommack was born on April 30, 1949, in Harrison County, Texas.

At just eight years old, he pledged his life to God and became born again. Then, at 19 years old, he realized that he had fallen prey to his own ego.

At this, his lowest point, he said that God’s love “consumed” him.

The experience put him on a path to pursue a relationship with God and the church. The problem was that it was the middle of the Vietnam War, and Wommack was about to be drafted and sent to the front lines.

Wommack began sharing the word of God with his fellow servicemen and women, and by the time he returned to US soil, he was more firmly on his path than ever before.

Wife

Around this time, Andrew Wommack also met Jamie, who would become his wife in 1972.

The pair ministered to small congregations initially, launching Wommack’s first Gospel Truth radio broadcast in Texas in 1976.

A radio show wasn’t the only thing the pair were creating—they also had two sons, Joshua and Jonathan Peter.

Wommack joked in a 1980s interview, “we were so poor when we started out in ministry, we couldn’t even pay attention.”

Not long after starting Gospel Truth, the newly minted pastor founded Andrew Wommack Ministries in 1978.

Two years later the Wommack family moved to Manitou Springs, Colorado.

They would spend the next four decades taking their vision from a small ministry to a nearly $70 million industry.

The Growth of an Empire

Wommack’s Gospel Truth radio would go on to be broadcast continuously from 1976 until it was transitioned to television and—eventually—internet radio.

The television program was launched on INSP at the start of the new millennium and has moved between several other Christian TV networks since then.

Eventually, it would find a home at Trinity Broadcasting Network as a daily radio and television show called Gospel Truth with Andrew Wommack.

Wommack credits God with his own desire to grow his ministry into an empire.

In an interview, he claimed that God warned him not to limit himself through “small thinking.”

So, the Andrew Wommack Ministry bought a bigger Colorado Springs facility—and launched a school.

It would move again in 2014 to upmarket Woodland Park—and by 2021, the Charis Bible College would have campuses across the globe.

Faith Healing

Taking a somewhat controversial approach to healing sickness, disease, and pain, Andrew Wommack is an advocate of faith healing.

His ministry operates what it calls a Healing School—a place where the faithful can receive God’s word and bear witness to miracles.

The Christian Research Institute called the claim “doctrinally aberrant,” and disagrees with claims that Wommack’s practice has cured sufferers of autism, lupus, and Lyme disease.
