He was born on May 17, 1959, in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, as James William Nantz III.

His father, Jim Nantz Jr., passed away on June 28, 2008.

Jim went to Marlboro High School. During high school, Nantz was the number one player on the golf team and co-captain of the basketball team.

In 1981, Jim earned a degree in radio/television from the University of Houston. During college, Jim played for the Cougars’ golf team with Fred Couples.

In 1985, Nantz joined CBS Sports as studio host of the network’s college basketball and football coverage.

”The guy was 25, 26, and smooth as could be,” Ed Goren said. Goren was an executive producer at CBS Sports at the time. ”It was a pretty easy decision to offer him the job.”

From 1998 to 2003, he hosted CBS’s pre-game program The NFL Today.

In 2001, Jim was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Houston.

In 2002, he was the youngest recipient of the Curt Gowdy Media Award.

The couple divorced on November 2, 2009. He was ordered to pay his ex-wife nearly $1 million a year in alimony and child support.

The alimony payments ($72,000 per month) are set to end when Nantz dies or Lorraine remarries, while the child support ($1,000 per week) ended when Caroline turned 18.

Jim also had to pay Caroline’s college expenses until she reached 23. Caroline graduated from the University of Southern California in 2016.

”There were 45 people in the house doing the finishing touches the day before the wedding,” Nantz said in February 2020 for Golf Week. He added: ”We had our rehearsal party and the christening of the house on the eve of the wedding.”

In their backyard, Jim built a miniaturized replica of Pebble’s seventh hole.
