He was born on June 1, 1935, in Reddish, Stockport, England, United Kingdom, as Norman Robert Foster.

His parents were Robert and Lilian Foster.

He went to Burnage Grammar School for Boys in Burnage.

At age 16, Norman left school to do his national service with the Royal Air Force.

In 1961, Foster graduated from Manchester University School of Architecture. A year later, he earned his master’s degree from the Yale School of Architecture.

In 1963, Foster, alongside Richard Rogers, Wendy Cheesman, and Su Brumwell, founded a British architectural firm, Team 4.

In June 1967, Norman and Richard decided to dissolve Team 4. Later that year, Foster co-founded Foster Associates in London. The architectural design and engineering firm is now known as Foster and Partners.
