As an actor, Pat Harrington Sr. appeared in a few Broadway plays, including the 1940s Cole Porter production Panama Hattie.

In 1950, Pat earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University, a private research university in New York City.

Pat became First Lieutenant while serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

In 1975, he landed his signature role as a macho handyman, named – Dwayne Schneider, on the TV sitcom One Day at a Time – an American sitcom that aired on CBS from December 16, 1975, until May 28, 1984.

He said of the series:

“It was such, such fun. Here’s what you had: You had a middle-aged single man who was lonesome. Look what landed in his lap: a ready-made family.”

Harrington Jr. went on to say:

”A gorgeous woman that I figured I could hit on and two kids who needed to be straightened out.”

For its entire run, One Day at a Time was taped in Hollywood before a studio audience.

Norman Lear, who developed “One Day at a Time,” said:

“He turned out to be the comic strength of the show.”

As a result of his role as Schneider on One Day at a Time, Pat landed a series of Ace Hardware commercials.

One of his lines during the sitcom was:

“The ladies in this building don’t call me ‘super’ for nothing.”

In 1979, Pat appeared as a celebrity guest star on Password Plus, an American TV game show that aired from January 8, 1979, to March 26, 1982, for more than 800 episodes.

In 1980, Harrington Jr. garnered a Golden Globe for his appearance in One Day at a Time. In 1984, he received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his exceptional performance in the TV sitcom.

In 2006, Pat appeared in an episode of The King of Queens – an American sitcom that initially ran on CBS. The show ended on May 7, 2018.

In 2012, he appeared as the manager of an apartment building on Bertinelli’s Hot in Cleveland. It was his final onscreen appearance.

He died on January 6, 2016, in LA, California, USA, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Pat had been declining with AD, took a fall in November 2015, and was hospitalized with a brain bleed.

His daughter – Tresa Harrington, wrote in a Facebook post:

“Dear friends, it is with the most unimaginable pain and sadness, that I tell you my father, Pat Harrington, Jr. passed away at 11:09 PM this evening.”

Tresa Harrington continued:

“We were all with him today and tonight: crying, laughing and loving him.”
