Hurby Azor Net Worth – $1 million
What is Hurby Azor’s net worth? Is Hurby Azor married?
Introduction
Hurby “Big Luv” Azor is a music producer and musician hailing from the Caribbean island of Haiti.
Throughout his long and storied career, Azor is perhaps best known as the creative force behind the hugely successful 90s rap act, Salt N Pepa.
The Origin Story
Hurby Azor was born on July 7th, 1965, in the Haitian city of Port-de-Paix.
Hurby Azor has a brother Steve Azor, however, Steve Azor is not Hurby Azor’s twin.
Little is known about his childhood or his early life beyond this.
Music Career And Salt N’ Pepa
Azor established himself as a behind-the-scenes force to be reckoned with, and was much more prolific as a songwriter and a producer than as an active performer.
During the early days of his career, Azor was dating Cheryl Renee James, one-half of the then-unknown female hip-hop outfit “Supernature.” It was during this time that Azor met James’ friend, Sandra Denton.
James and Denton (and third member DJ Spinderella) would, of course, go on to become the best-selling act that defined female hip-hop in the 90s – the iconic Salt N’ Pepa. But while everybody has heard of the “Push It” and “Let’s Talk About Sex” rappers, not many people know of the so-called “fourth member” of the rap act – Hurby Azor.
Azor was a Quincy Jones/Malcolm McClaren-esque mogul who was instrumental in the trio coming together musically and professionally.
Azor penned the best-selling “Push It” and also performed in the video, as well as writing Salt N’ Pepa’s other big hit, “Let’s Talk About Sex.”
Though things didn’t work out between him and Cheryl “Salt” James, the professional collaboration between them and Sandra “Pepa” Denton would be one of the 90s’ most iconic.
Azor didn’t limit his creative talents to the world-famous duo, however. In addition to his career-defining turn writing and producing for Salt N’ Pepa, he also produced several other lesser-known yet successful acts.
Dana Dane, Kwamé, and Sweet Dee, amongst other acts, all had Azor produce their tracks.
Azor also co-wrote and produced the song “Anything For You,” a reggae anthem by Canadian performer Snow that enjoyed a massive cult following in Jamaica.
The All-Star Remix of the song, featuring several famous Jamaican dancehall DJs, has been described as “the most important Jamaican dancehall song of the 90s” and was the most requested song on the US network “The Box” at the time of release.
Present Day
Azor shows no signs of slowing down in his 60s.
The talented music producer has taken a more prominent role in showbiz, appearing as a judge on the Haitian talent show “Digicel Star of Stars.”
Wishing to see what is possibly the most important part of his legacy done justice, Azor signed on as co-producer for Lifetime TV’s 2021 biopic of the rap outfit, the aptly-named Salt N’ Pepa.
The jury is out on whether or not Azor played any part in how his character – a self-interested womanizer who repeatedly cheats on Salt and eventually dumps her for not mentioning him in a TV interview – was portrayed.
Wife/Girlfriend
Hurby Azor is not married. However, Azor was in a relationship with Cheryl Renee James from 1984 until 1989. Cheryl married Gavin Wray in 2000. At the time of writing, Hurby Azor is probably single.
Hurby Azor – Net Worth
So, how much is Hurby Azor worth? Azor earned most of his wealth from his career as a hip-hop music producer, especially from working with Salt-N-Pepa. He also founded Idol Makers Films and Idol Makers Management. Therefore, Hurby Azor has an estimated net worth of $1 million.
