Amber Heard and Elon Musk were together from 2016 (or 2015, according to Depp) to 2018. “18 months of unrelenting insanity,” Musk recalled, that was “mind-bogglingly painful.”
The two first met on the set of the 2013 film Machete Kills.
Heard and Elon Musk met for the second time at the 2016 Met Gala in Manhattan after being stood up by her then-husband Johnny Depp.
Amber and Johnny had both been invited as guests of Ralph Lauren, but Depp didn’t show after they had a big fight on her 30th birthday.
“So I ended up going by myself,” Amber Heard later confessed. “I sat next to an empty place setting for Johnny that they cleared as soon as we realized he effectively stood me up on the red carpet.”
On the line for the red carpet, Amber found herself standing next to Musk but didn’t recognize him at first.

“I didn’t recognize [Musk] until we started talking and he reminded me we had met once before,” the actress explained. “He was at a nearby table, we got to speaking that night, and we eventually became friends.”
Musk and Heard reportedly began dating in the summer of 2016 after they were spotted cozied up together in Miami and London.
During Johnny Depp‘s defamation trial, it was alleged that Musk and Heard started dating secretly in 2015.

“From March 2015 onwards, Ms. Heard was visited regularly late at night, at around 11:00 pm to midnight, by Mr. Elon Musk,” a security guard for the LA building where Amber and Johnny lived wrote in a witness statement. “I believe he visited Ms. Heard a few times a week and he would always visit when Mr. Depp was not at home.”
Depp also said during the defamation lawsuit that Amber began a relationship with Tesla co-founder “no later than one month after” they married in 2015. However, Amber testified that she didn’t become acquainted with Elon until May 2016.
Musk was expected to testify at the trial, but he did not take the stand.
The June 2016 Wildflowers Surprise

In June 2016, Heard surprised Elon with wildflowers at the Tesla factory in Fremont, California. His security team reportedly helped her hide in the back of a Tesla.
The couple went Instagram official in April 2017 when Amber posted a photo of herself and Musk at Moo Moo Restaurant on the Gold Coast of Australia.
“Amber and Elon are both very serious about each other,” Heard’s father said in 2017. “She would love to get married. One of the things they want to do is settle down and have a family. They are making plans for that.”

Heard and Musk split in August 2017.
“Although Amber and I did break up, we are still friends, remain close and love one another,” Musk wrote on Instagram in August 2017.
“Although we have broken up, Elon and I care deeply for one another and remain close,” the Aquaman actress also wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for the continued support, respect, and privacy during these difficult, very human times.”
Musk admitted the breakup ‘hurt bad’
“I just broke up with my girlfriend,” Elon told author Neil Strauss in November 2017. “I was really in love, and it hurt bad. Well, she broke up with me more than I broke up with her, I think.”
Elon said in the same interview that he “cannot be happy” without a girlfriend. “‘I never want to be alone.’”
The two had an on-and-off relationship over the following months before finally breaking up in February 2018. The following month, they attend the same Oscars party in LA.
“Elon and I had a beautiful relationship, and we have a beautiful friendship now, one that was based on our core values,” Heard told The Hollywood Reporter in December 2018.
Heard’s X account disappears

Heard’s X account has disappeared after several days since Musk bought the social media platform. It is unclear when or why Heard removed her account.
Amber welcomed twins
In 2025, the actress welcomed twins Ocean and Agnes via a surrogate. She has been living in Spain since 2022, but the country doesn’t support surrogacy.
Amber hasn’t revealed the identity of her twins’ father; as such, some fans speculate that Musk is the father.
“Whitney told me…. [Heard] was in a legal battle with him [Elon] over the rights to embryos they had created together,” Jennifer Howell, a former colleague of Heard’s sister, Whitney Henriquez, stated in a sworn court document during the 2022 defamation trial. “He wanted to destroy them, and Amber tried to keep them to have a baby.”
