From 2002 to 2004, she worked as Chief Administrator of the Chicago Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards. Lightfoot was in charge of investigating possible cases of police misconduct.
From 2004 to 2005, Lightfoot served as the Chief of staff and general counsel of the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
From 2015 to 2018, she was the President of the Chicago Police Board.
Mayor of Chicago
In May 2018, Lightfoot announced her candidacy for Mayor of Chicago. Lori said she is not “tied to the broken political machine.”
In April 2019, she became the first openly gay person elected mayor of Chicago. Lightfoot is also the third African-American to be mayor of Chicago.
”We have an opportunity to make sure every Chicagoan has the opportunity to reach their full potential,” Lori said at the time. She added: ”As Mayor, I promise that I’ll always be in your corner to make sure every neighborhood has a seat at the table.”
She officially took office as Mayor of Chicago on May 20, 2019.
”It was a campaign full of unanticipated twists and turns, but our commitment to fairness, equity, and inclusion never changed,” Lightfoot wrote on her Instagram in May 2020. ”As we recover and rebuild, those principles will continue to guide our city.”
In 2020, Lightfoot appeared in the mini-series ”The Second City Presents: The Last Show Left on Earth.”
In June 2020, she was at Oprah’s home in California. ”It was great. She’s a remarkable person, as you know,” she said.

Lori Lightfoot married Amy Eshleman on the same day same-sex marriages became legal in Illinois (June 1, 2014).
”I am most proud of, is the number of parents that come to me, pull me aside, and they’ll say, ‘My son or daughter just came out. They’re so encouraged by who you are, the way your carry yourself in the world,’” Lightfoot told ClickOnDetroit.
Note – Eshleman graduated from Sterling High School in 1980. Amy played on the tennis and basketball teams during high school. In 1984, Eshleman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Miami University in Oxford. She worked as a Chicago Public Library assistant commissioner from 1994 to 2012.
In June 2018, Amy and Lori walked in the Chicago Pride Parade.
