She was born on February 8, 1971, in Bethesda, Maryland, as Maura Tracy Healey.
Her paternal grandparents came from Ireland.
Her father was a captain in the U.S. Public Health Service, while her mother was a nurse at Lincoln Akerman School.
Healey grew up as the eldest of five kids.
By the time she was 10, her parents had split up.
“My parents divorced when I was about 10,” Healey told Jimmy Tingle in 2022. “My mom then raised us, and you know she went back to work as a school nurse … she was a nurse before that, and she worked incredibly hard to keep things together.”
She went to Winnacunnet High School.
In 1992, Healey graduated from Harvard College, majoring in government.
During college, she captained the basketball team.
After college, she played professional basketball for a couple of years in Austria.
In 1998, Maura earned a law degree from Northeastern University School of Law.
From September 1998 to September 1999, Healey worked as a law clerk for Hon. A David Mazzone.

Martha Coakley, the Massachusetts attorney general, appointed Maura to serve as Chief of the Civil Rights Division in 2007.
Healey became the Public Protection and Advocacy Bureau’s chief in 2012.

Attorney General
In October 2013, Healey announced her candidacy for attorney general.
“I think where this campaign starts by my doing what I did when I ran for attorney general, to get out to visit with people all over the state, to listen to them, to learn from them, and offer a vision for how we move forward,” she said for WCVB Channel 5 Boston.
“Maura will bring unmatched experience as a litigator and an advocate to the tough fights ahead for Massachusetts,” sen. Stanley C. Rosenberg said at the time.
Mayor Lisa Wong also endorsed Maura Healey, and said that “this is the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that we need to realign our resources.”
In 2014, Maura was elected attorney general, defeating John Miller 62.5% to 37.5%.
Healey won a second term as attorney general in 2018.
2022 US elections
In early 2022, Maura announced her candidacy in the 2022 Massachusetts gubernatorial election “to bring us together and come back stronger than ever.”
“I’ve been privileged to be attorney general for the last seven years and built a great team,” Healey said in the summer of 2022.
She added: “500 really hard-working men and women who are trying to deliver for people around the state day in and day out, and I’m running for governor because I believe that these are really challenging times. There are a lot of challenges we face out there, but they’re also opportunities.”
Charlie Baker, the governor of Massachusetts, decided against running for a third term.
Healey campaigned on a long list of Democratic priorities, including improving public transportation, promoting green jobs, and expanding affordable housing.
She won the 2022 Massachusetts gubernatorial election on November 8, 2022.
She stated: “I’ll be a governor for everyone, and I’ll work with anyone who’s up for making a difference in this state.”

Wife/Partner
Maura Healey is openly gay.
In 2014, she was the first openly gay AG elected in the country.
In 2022, Healey became the first open lesbian to be elected governor in US history.
Maura Healey was in a relationship with her partner Gabrielle Wolohojian, an American judge who earned her Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in 1987. She was appointed to the Massachusetts Appeals Court in 2008.
