He was born on January 16, 1949, in Ely, Missouri, US, as Larry W Potterfield.

”When I came into this world, back in the winter of 1949; there was no electricity in that small farmhouse in rural Marion County, Missouri,” Larry wrote on his website.

Potterfield received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

After college, Larry spent six years in the Air Force. ”I joined the Air Force in 1971, after finishing my degree in business,” Potterfield detailed. He added: ”My first duty assignment was Blytheville Air Force Base, Arkansas.”

In 1974, Potterfield earned an MS in Management from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

In 1977, he founded MidwayUSA.Ely Arms, Inc.

Initially, the company started as a small shop in Columbia, Missouri.

”We have been in business since the 18th of June 1977, so this is our 37th year in business,” he said in a 2014 interview. Potterfield added: ”We carry just about everything for shooters, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts.”

In 2009, MidwayUSA won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience

In 2011, Larry, with his wife and Dick Leeper, created the Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience.

In 2012, he received the Entrepreneur Of The Year Central Midwest Award from Ernst and Young.

In 2016, Larry appeared in the documentary ”Making a Killing: Guns, Greed, and the NRA.”

Also in 2016, Midway was a Sponsor of the SCI Convention. ”Brenda and I are passionate hunters and strong advocates for wildlife conservation,” he stated at the time. ”As sportsmen, it’s our responsibility to fight for and support those organizations that we closely align with.”

In 2018, Potterfield and his wife received the C.J. McElroy Award from Safari Club International.

In 2019, Larry appeared as himself in the series ”Booger Bottom USA.”

In 1970, Larry Potterfield married Brenda Potterfield.

The two first met while at Hannibal-LaGrange College.

In 2007, they founded The MidwayUSA Foundation. The foundation has paid more than $28 million in grants.

”Brenda and I, along with the rest of the folks at MidwayUSA, strongly believe in the mission of conservation,” Larry said in 2014.

In 2016, they received the John L. Morris award from the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies. ”Brenda and I are honored to accept the John L. Morris Award from the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies,” Potterfield stated.

In 2017, the couple received the Peter Hathaway Capstick Hunting Heritage Award and the Golden Bullseye Pioneer Award. 

In December 2021, Larry and his wife donated a building that will be the new home of the Boy Scouts of America Great Rivers Council. Potterfield said that the ”building has served us well but is no longer a part of our future.”
