Mike Shildt is an American baseball coach who managed the Cardinals from the middle of the 2018 season through ’21.
Biography
He was born on August 9, 1968, in Charlotte, North Carolina, US, as Michael Timothy Shildt.
Mike went to Olympic High School. During high school, Shildt played high school baseball.
He received a business degree from the University of North Carolina Asheville.
For five years, Shildt was an assistant coach at UNC Asheville.
He broke into pro ball as a scout, and in 2004, Shildt moved into the coaching ranks.
By 2009 he was the manager of the Johnson City Cardinals.
From 2010 to 2012, Mike won three consecutive championships at Johnson City and the Springfield Cardinals.
For the 2015 and 2016 seasons, he took over as the manager of the Memphis Redbirds.
For the 2017 season, he was quality control coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals Name Shildt Their New Manager
Shildt replaced Mike Matheny on an interim basis on July 14, 2018. He was viewed as an anonymous placeholder when President of Baseball Operations Mozeliak fired Matheny.
He had his interim title removed on August 28, 2018. Shildt became the 50th manager in the Cardinals’ history.
Interestingly, Mike is one of only 8 men to manage a major league team without ever having played a professional baseball game.
“What a privilege and honor it is to be the field manager of the St. Louis Cardinals,” he said at the time.
“Having Shildt as manager is a tremendous story,” John Mozeliak said. “I hope the next chapter is even better.”
Bill DeWitt Jr, the owner of the St. Louis Cardinals, said in a statement – “We are pleased to name Mike Shildt as the St. Louis Cardinals manager.”
In 2019, he led the St. Louis Cardinals to the National League Central title.
In November 2019, he was named the 2019 National League Manager of the Year.
Interesting facts – he is the third Cardinals manager to be named Manager of the Year and the first Manager of the Year winner in history who never played a day of professional baseball.
Fired by St. Louis Cardinals
In October 2021, Shildt was fired as St. Louis Cardinals manager. He was, understandably, caught off guard by the decision.
Mozeliak cited a “philosophical difference in the direction that our Major League club is going.” He declined to expand on those differences.
“We just decided that internally it would be best to separate now,” Mozeliak said.
Mike had one more year left on his contract.
In his first public comments since being fired, Shildt expressed his gratitude to the Cardinals. “It was always about what’s best for the Cardinals and the St. Louis Cardinals organization,” Mike also said.
“I was so loyal to that organization and cared so much,” he detailed in a later interview.
MLB
In December 2021, it was announced that Shildt would be taking on a new role with MLB.
The San Diego Padres
In January 2022, he was hired by The San Diego Padres as a player development consultant.
In March 2022, Shildt took over as coaching third base for the Padres after third-base coach Matt Williams was sidelined by hip surgery.
“I’m ready to get back into the fray with the right opportunity,” Shildt said in June 2022.
Wife
Om March 6, 2020, Mike Shildt married Michelle Lee Shildt (née Segrave).
Michelle works as a charter broker and private aviation insurance.
“The gift today is really all mine,” Michelle wrote on her Instagram on August 9, 2021. She added: “I’ve been given the most wonderful human to do life with.”
