#1 Magnum, P.I. (1980 – 1988)

From 1980 to 1988, Selleck starred in 158 episodes of the drama TV series Magnum, P.I. as private investigator Thomas Magnum. He lives in the guesthouse of a 200-acre beachfront estate in Hawaii.

Selleck won an Emmy in 1984 for his portrayal of the title character.

At that time, he was arguably one of the biggest stars in the world.

Selleck portrayed gentleman jewel thief Nick Lassiter in the heist spy film Lassiter.

In 1987, he played Peter Mitchell in the comedy Three Men and a Baby. The film grossed over $240 million worldwide. It is based on the French film Trois hommes et un couffin.

“Because of Selleck and his co-stars, the movie becomes a heartwarming entertainment,” Roger Ebert wrote.

#4 An Innocent Man (1989)

His next important role was in An Innocent Man as an airline mechanic wrongly sent to prison.

In 1990, Selleck starred in the western film Quigley Down Under as Matthew Quigley — an American sharpshooter who travels to Australia to accept a high-paying job. The film was shot entirely in Australia. 

When I found the script, it had already been through a lot of hands, one of them being Sean Connery’s,” the actor later said. “But I just absolutely loved it.”

#6 Mr. Baseball (1992)

In Mr. Baseball, Selleck portrayed veteran New York Yankees first baseman Jack Elliot. During its first weekend, it grossed over $5 million at the box office. Initially, Selleck signed on for only three episodes.

He guest-starred in 10 episodes of Friends as Dr. Richard Burke, Monica Geller’s love interest. Geller was played by Courteney Cox.

“People talk to me about my role on ‘Friends’ all the time,” Selleck revealed in an interview. “It was a lovely experience, something I didn’t see coming.”

In 1997, he played alongside Matt Dillon and Joan Cusack in the comedy film In & Out. The film did well at the box office (over $63 million).

In 2000, Tom performed as Governor James Pryce in the political comedy-drama film Running Mates.

“I think the picture speaks to that in a pretty entertaining way,” the actor later confessed. “No, it didn’t fuel any desires to run for public office.”

In Monte Walsh, Selleck is seen as an aging cowboy facing the final days of the Wild West era. It is a remake of the Monte Walsh film in which Lee Marvin. was the lead actor.

The series finale aired on December 13, 2024. Selleck was ‘frustrated’ by Blue Bloods cancellation.
