Fred Ridley had his first golfing victory in 1975 when he won the leading American amateur golf tournament, the United States Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia.
By the end of 1975, Fred Ridley was rated as the second-best amateur golf player in the United States by the golf magazine Golf Digest.
In 1976, Fred Ridley won the Monroe Invitational Championship, an annual amateur golf tournament in New York.
He also competed in the 1976 Open Championship in Southport, England, later the same year.
Ridley also participated in the 1976 Eisenhower Trophy as a member of the United States’ team. Later in the year, he was ranked as the tenth-best amateur golf player in the United States by Golf Digest.

In 1977, Fred Ridley competed in the British Amateur Championship, a golf tournament held annually in the United Kingdom.
He also competed in the 1977 Walker Cup at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Southampton, New York, where he won two singles matches against Sandy Lyle and lost a foursomes match.
Despite his numerous successes, Fred Ridley never became a professional golfer and remains the only United States Amateur Championship winner to have never become a professional golfer.
However, Fred Ridley continued to participate in amateur golfing events and competed in the 1987 British Amateur Championship.
He was also the captain of the United States team at the 1987 and 1989 Walker Cups and the 2010 Eisenhower Trophy.

He also served as co-chairman of the International Golf Federation and competition committee chairman for the 2011 Masters Tournament.
