The Short Story

Michael Singletary is a professional football coach and former Chicago Bears player.

He was drafted in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft and earned the title “The Heart of the Defense” throughout the 80s.

Mike Singletary was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the Pro Football Hall of Fame three years later.

The Long Story

Michael Singletary was born on 9th October 1958, in Houston, Texas.

Singletary was the youngest of 10 children to parents Charles and Rudell.

The family of 12 lived in a modest wood-framed property next door to the Church of God—a church that Mike’s father had built.

Sadly, Mike’s older brother, Dale, died unexpectedly of asphyxiation after fumes from a coal stove filled the room he was sleeping in.

While Mike didn’t have a strong relationship with his father, his brother Grady filled the role of a father figure in Singletary’s younger years.

Grady steered him away from alcohol and cigarettes and encouraged his interest in football.

The pair would watch the Dallas Cowboys, and Grady often encouraged his young ward to follow his dreams of becoming like Bob Lilly and Lee Roy Jordan.

Tragedy would hit the Singletary family again several years later, when Grady was involved in a six-car pile-up.

The drunk driver who caused the accident survived unharmed, but Grady lost his life.

Singletary was committed to following his dreams with or without Grady by his side, and by ninth grade at Evan E.

Worthing high school, he was an all-state linebacker. He earned a scholarship to Baylor University under the guidance of Baylor coach—and future mentor—Grant Teaff.

He placed #56 on the list of 100 Greatest Football Players, as chosen by The Sporting News.

On March 29, 2018, Mike Singletary took a new career path and accepted a job at Trinity Christian Academy in Addison, Texas. In December 2019, he quit this position.

In 2019, Mike was the head coach of Memphis Express, while in 2020, the defensive coordinator of TSL Generals.
