In 1984, Swisher earned her BS degree from Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.

Kara told MSN that she started her career in journalism: ”At my college paper, The Hoya, at Georgetown University.” Swisher added: ”I soon was writing for The Washington Post, though, by junior year.”

In 1985, she received an M.S. from the Columbia School of Journalism.

In 1997, Kara joined The Wall Street Journal, where she wrote the column BoomTown. She left her position in August 2001.

In July 1998, Swisher released the book – ”aol.com: How Steve Case Beat Bill Gates, Nailed the Netheads and Made Millions in the War for the Web.” The book details how AOL became the world’s biggest online company.
