He was born on April 27, 1952, in Los Angeles, California, USA, as Laurence Allen Elder, to Viola and Randolph Elder.
Larry said about his mother: “My mother had one year of college, which for a black woman of her age…is like having a Ph.D. from Harvard.” She passed away in June 2006.
Elder has an older brother named Kirk.
He grew up in South Central Los Angeles.
Larry graduated from Crenshaw High School.
In 1974, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in political science from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
In 1977, Elder got his JD from the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Later, Larry worked at a law firm in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1993, he began hosting an evening talk show on KABC.
In September 2000, he published his first book titled – ”The Ten Things You Can’t Say in America.”
From 2001 to 2002, Elder hosted Moral Court, a court series aired by Warner Brothers Television.

In 2020, he served as the writer of Uncle Tom, a documentary film directed by Justin Malone. Larry was also featured in the documentary.

In July 2020, it was announced that Elder has officially been nominated for induction into the Radio Hall of Fame.

2021 California gubernatorial recall election
In July 2021, Larry announced that he was running in the 2021 California gubernatorial recall election.
The radio host has raised $4.5 million in campaign funds. ”I’m running to be the best governor I could possibly be,” Elder said.
2024 Presidential election
On April 20, 2023, he announced his campaign for president of the US. Ekder dropped out on October 26, 2023. “I have made the difficult decision to suspend my campaign,” he wrote in a statement.
