Biography

He was born on March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland, as Anthony Robert McMillan, to Ian Baxter McMillan and Jean Ross Howie.

He changed his name when he got into acting.

Coltrane studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art.

Robbie began acting professionally in the late ’70s, doing television and stage work.

In 1983, the Scottish actor played alongside Hugh Laurie, Siobhan Redmond, and Emma Thompson, in the ITV comedy Alfresco.

In 1987, he performed again with Emma Thompson (she also played in Harry Potter as Divination Professor Sybill Trelawney) in the six-part drama series, Tutti Frutti.

In 1995, Coltrane portrayed Russian Mafia boss Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond film Goldeneye.

In 1999, he reprised his role as Zukovsky in The World Is Not Enough.

He met Gemmell in December 1988 when she was a college student.

Death

On October 14, 2022, Robbie Coltrane passed away in a hospital in Scotland. He was 72.

According to the death certificate, he suffered from heart block, lower respiratory tract infection, and sepsis before his passing.

“He was a big friendly giant on screen but even more so In real life,” Tom Felton wrote on Instagram. “Love you mate – thank you for everything.”

“Robbie was like the most fun uncle I’ve ever had, but most of all,” Emma Watson said in a statement shared on her Instagram story. “His talent was so immense that it made sense he played a giant.”

“Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on that set,” Daniel Radcliffe said.

“He was an incredible talent, a complete one off,” Harry Potter author JK Rowling wrote on social media. “I was beyond fortunate to know him, work with him and laugh my head off with him.”

“A giant hearted man who was still looking out for us even decades later,” added Rupert Grint. “Sending love to his family.”

Robbie Coltrane was 6′ 1″ (1.85 m) tall.

“In real life, I’m 6′ 1″,” Coltrane once said about his height. “Each way pretty well, north and south and east and west, unfortunately.”

While this is above average, it falls short of Rubeus Hagrid’s half-giant stature of 8 feet 6 inches showed in the films — this is also smaller than the 12-foot half-giant described in the books.

In the early 90s, he wrote an autobiography, Coltrane in a Cadillac, where he detailed “his passion for vintage American cars.”
