She attended Morris High School. In 1977, she graduated with honors and earned a B.A. in psychology from Oklahoma State University.

In 1980, Hill earned her J.D. from Yale University. Later, Anita was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar.

In 1981, Hill began working for Clarence Thomas at the US Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights.

From 1983 to 1986, she became an assistant professor at the Evangelical Christian O. W. Coburn School of Law at Oral Roberts University.

Starting in 1986, Hill taught commercial law and contracts at the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

On October 11, 1991, she said in televised hearings that Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas had sexually harassed her while he was her supervisor at the Department of Education and the EEOC.

Hill was called to publicly testify after a report of a private interview of Hill by the FBI was leaked to the press before Thomas’ confirmation hearings.

She said: ”I have no personal vendetta against Clarence Thomas.” Hill continued: ”I seek only to provide the committee with information which it may regard as relevant.”

Soon after, President George H. W. Bush dropped a bill that gave harassment victims the right to seek federal damage awards, back pay, and reinstatement.

In 1992, Anita received the American Bar Association’s Commission on Women in the Profession’s “Women of Achievement” award.

In 1997, Hill published her autobiography titled – ”Speaking Truth to Power.”

In the book, Anita detailed her role in the Clarence Thomas confirmation controversy.

She wrote in her autobiography:

”Women who accuse men, particularly powerful men, of harassment are often confronted with the reality of the men’s sense that they are more important than women, as a group.”

Hill took a counsel position with the Civil Rights & Employment Practice group of the plaintiffs’ law firm Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll in 2011.

In the same year, she published the book ”Reimagining Equality: Stories of Gender, Race, and Finding Home.”

Kerry Washington portrayed Hill in the HBO TV movie ”Confirmation” in 2016.

She was awarded an honorary LLM degree by Wesleyan University in 2018.

Before Joe Biden announced his bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, he called Anita to express his regret over how she was treated for his handling of a 1991 Senate hearing.

Hill said for BBC that apology was not enough without “real change.” She said:  ”I cannot be satisfied by simply saying, ‘I’m sorry for what happened to you.’”

Biden said for ABC: ”I believed her from the very beginning, but I was chairman. She did not get a fair hearing.” Joe Biden also said: ”I’m sorry for the way she got treated…If you go back and look at what I said or didn’t say, I don’t think I treated her badly.”
