Sud had been working at Vimeo for a long time serving as the company’s General Manager and the head of marketing.

She also serves on the board of Dolby Laboratories, a company that specializes in audio encoding and compression.

In 2017, she was listed on The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen: 35 Under 35 honorees.

In 2018, Anjali was listed as one of Fortune’s 40 under 40 rising business leaders and is an officially designated Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum.

Her latest honor comes from 2019, when she was given a Muse Award by the New York Women in Film and Television.

Sud is an incredible businesswoman who has a lot she can still give to the world at large.

The Origin Story

Anjali Sud was born on August 13, 1983, in Detroit, Michigan as a daughter of Indian immigrants.

She is the oldest of three kids and has a younger brother and sister. Sud had a penchant for the performing arts, but as she grew up, she started to pursue a more business-centric career.

Her father runs a plastics recycling plant in Flint, Michigan (also the hometown of actor Terry Crews), where she grew up and saw firsthand how a business can be a positive force for good in the local community by creating jobs.

Inspired by what she saw, Sud went to the Philips Academy Andover preparatory school, an institution with a long list of notable alumni like actor Jack Lemmon and former President George W. Bush.

Sud would eventually go on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2005.

She later received a Master’s Degree from Harvard Business School.

Tenor as General Manager

After graduating from college, Sud worked as an investment banker, where she got some experience in the finance world and learned about mergers and acquisitions.

She would eventually join Vimeo as the Head of Global Marketing in 2014, where she rose through the ranks to become the company’s General Manager.

As the General Manager, Sud built the company’s business model of hosting, distributing, and monetizing videos and launched multiple features on Vimeo’s platform, such as Vimeo Business, a membership for brands, 360 video support, and review tools.

Originally, Vimeo started off as a niche website for independent filmmakers to post their work instead of YouTube. It had hoped to become a streaming service like Netflix; however, the business was losing money until Sud came in and changed everything.

In an interview, Sud said that she saw an opportunity for her to be a champion of the creator’s on the site.

She would focus on creators and help push the company to empower content creators more.

Early on, she noticed that a lot of businesses and customers used Vimeo to post-marketing videos on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other websites.

Her successful moves eventually earned her the role of CEO of Vimeo in July 2017 as Sud moved the company’s focus from original content to offering tools and apps to video creators.

Interestingly enough, Sud mentioned she never once applied to the role of CEO when the company was looking for someone.

But as she gained more prominence in the company and directed it, the rest of Vimeo saw the potential she was capable of and how she can make everything grow.

She wanted Vimeo to become a platform for businesses to come in and make their own videos without having to fall into the chaos of YouTube.

Business owners can use the platform to shoot, edit, save, and distributes videos.

It is similar to YouTube now but more focused on a specific group.

Sud’s changes saw the company earn a lot of money.

During the fourth quarter of 2020, Vimeo posted sales of $84 million which is a 54% increase from the same time in 2019.

Earlier this year, the subscriber count on the website went up to 1.5 million compared to the same time in 2020.

In the short period of time, Anjali Sud has been CEO of Vimeo, and the worth of the company has exploded. In 2021, Vimeo raised $300 million in equity.

The platform also has no commercials in its videos, so corporate clients don’t have to worry about rival companies running advertisements on their videos.

Since the move to software and business support, the internal studio at Vimeo has shut down. They have dropped the streaming aspect of their business. Sud and the company realized there is no use in competing with Amazing Prime Video or Netflix.

Sud said that the company is building the platform for a new hybrid workplace where she expects video to dominate even more. She seeks to make virtual meetings and events more interactive.

On July 5, 2023, Sud left her position at Vimeo.

Tubi

On July 17, 2023, Anjali Sud was appointed CEO of Tubi. “The future of streaming TV is free, and I am excited to join the Tubi team to help shape the next wave of entertainment,” she stated.

Sud is very close with her family as she told Business Insider that she goes to her dad for advice all the time.

She claims that the best advice that her father has ever given was to “live outside of your comfort zone” and to “put yourself in positions where you might not have a ton of experience.”

This advice is what led her to pursue a career at Vimeo, and her skill and talent earned her a top spot.

She even called her father right after she was offered the position of CEO of Vimeo.
