Introduction

Fans of The Lord of the Rings have waited for months—and speculated for what feels like years—over Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Who will be cast? Who will play the most beloved—and feared, and despised—characters of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy world? And how is the whole series going to work?

We might not know the answer to that last question, but following the premiere show’s premiere in September of 2022, we can finally answer the first two.

The Rings of Power could be a launching pad for a lot of careers.

And one name that’s definitely in the spotlight is Daniel Weyman.

The British actor plays the mysterious character known only as The Stranger, who hits Middle-earth with a bang—literally!

But is it easier to uncover facts about Daniel Weyman’s real life than it is to uncover who his enigmatic character is? Let’s find out.

The Origin Story

Daniel Weyman was born in Jesmond in 1977. Jesmond, which is a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne—home of MTV’s beloved Geordie Shore—has always been home to Weyman, who still supports Newcastle United football club.

As a kid, Daniel’s family—including his two brothers and one sister—moved with their parents to York, so their father could take up a promotion at Rowntree in Fawdon.

After high school, Daniel enrolled at the University of Nottingham to study Chemistry.

From here, he secured a job in research development at Unilever—which manufactures everything from beauty products to toiletries to vitamins, drinks, and even Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

A Change of Plans

Freshly graduated from the University of Nottingham with his Chemistry degree, Weyman had a plan—a plan that didn’t include acting.

“I came quite late to acting. I never thought that I could really make a career of it.”

Daniel had enjoyed being a part of the local youth theatre scene while he was studying, but had very few expectations of that hobby after graduation.

Regardless of how he felt, though, Weyman couldn’t shake his passion for acting and decided to “try my luck” and apply to drama school.

Not only did Daniel get accepted into his acting school of choice, but he also won a scholarship, which solidified his decision to try and become a full-time actor.

He scored the chance of a lifetime when he earned a stage role with the influential Donmar Warehouse theatre.

By 2003, he had appeared in his first television role on the ITV crime drama, Wire in the Blood.

He was 26 years old at the time, and remembers being “so delighted that I was walking around London just laughing to myself.”

The Rise to the Top

In the years since Weyman secured his first paid acting role, he’s built an impressive list of acting credits that include appearances on UK television shows like ITV’s Poirot, Gentleman Jack, and the BBC’s Silent Witness.

There was also a notable stint on Foyle’s War as Adam Wainwright.

It was this role that saw him play the on-screen husband of Honeysuckle Week’s character, Samantha.

Honeysuckle and Weyman built a strong friendship over their time on the show together.

Weyman joined the search following Honeysuckle’s disappearance in 2016—the actress was found safe and well in Essex.

Weyman—like many working actors—has also lent his talents to voice acting.

He won the UK Audio Production award for Narrator of the Year in 2016 and has narrated bestselling audiobooks like Sally Green’s The Burning Kingdoms and The Demon World, and the #1 New York Times bestseller, Into the Water by Paula Hawkins.

Daniel Weyman and The Rings of Power

Daniel’s character in Amazon Prime’s LOTR television series was always going to be a pivotal one.

While the early story tended to focus on the nomadic Harfoots—and Nori, played by Markella Kavenagh—it is her discovery of the mysterious Stranger that held audiences captivated.

After a red comet crashes into Middle-earth and The Stranger is revealed, Nori and her buddy Poppy stash him away.

Several impressive revelations follow—like the fact that he conjures shadows and wind when he gets startled.

While fans need to keep watching the series to uncover who The Stranger really is, Daniel is one of very few actors who have known all along.

“I […] knew who he was and what he was going through. Hopefully, people will have as much fun watching his story [as I had working on it].”

Things weren’t so cut and dried for Weyman’s cast mates, including Markella Kavenagh.

The actress who plays Nori explained that she was “finding it out week to week.”
