Dick Wolf is an American television producer best known for contributing as co-creator and executive producer of the Chicago franchise and creator and executive producer of the Law & Order franchise.


He was born on December 20, 1946, in New York City, New York, USA, as Richard A. Wolf.

His mother was a housewife, while his father was an advertising executive.

He was a classmate of former US President George W. Bush​.

In 1969, Wolf graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. During college, he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity.

In 1988, he founded his own TV production company,­ Wolf Films.

From 1990 to 2010, Wolf produced Law & Order, a police procedural and legal drama television series set and filmed in New York City.

Starting in 1999, Dick serves as creator and executive producer of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He had the idea for the show from the 1986 “preppie murder” case of Robert Chambers.

He was also the executive producer for the four spinoff shows in the franchise – Law & Order: Los Angeles, Law & Order: UK, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

In 2002, Wolf received the Creative Achievement Award from NATPE.

In 2003, he published the book – ”Law & Order: Crime Scenes.”

In March 2007, Dick received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7040 Hollywood Boulevard.

In 2007, Dick and Tom Thayer produced the HBO original movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.”

In 2012, Wolf, alongside Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, created Chicago Fire, a drama TV series that explores the lives of the firefighters of the Chicago Fire Department.

Chicago Fire is the first installment of Wolf’s Chicago franchise which also includes – Chicago Justice, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D.

In 2012, Wolf made a guest appearance as himself in the TV series ”Family Guy.”

In 2013, Wolf was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.

In 2018, Dick and Craig Turk created the American crime drama TV series FBI. The cast includes – Katherine Renee Turner, John Boyd, Missy Peregrym, Alana de la Garza, Sela Ward, Ebonée Noel, Jeremy Sisto, and Zeeko Zaki.

In September 2018, Dick announced that it had an order of 13 episodes of Law & Order: Hate Crimes. ”As with all of my crime shows, I want to depict what’s really going on in our cities and shine a light on the wide-ranging victims and show that justice can prevail,” he told NBC Universal.

From 2017 to 2020, Wolf served as the executive producer of the documentary series, Criminal Confessions.


On September 5, 1970, Dick Wolf married Susan Scranton, daughter of the former governor of Pennsylvania, William Scranton.

They divorced on March 16, 1983.

On June 29, 1983, Dick married Christine Marburg.

The two divorced in 2003.

As a part of her settlement, Marburg received the former couple’s house in Maine (valued at $4 million), $2 million in spousal support for eight years, and $17.5 million in cash.

In 2004, Marburg filed a lawsuit against Dick, claiming that her ex-husband tricked her into signing the divorce settlement without informing her of his $1 billion deal in the works with NBC Universal. In 2016, a judge dismissed all of Marburg’s claims.

On June 17, 2006, Wolf married Noelle Lippman.
