He was born on December 20, 1946, in New York City, New York, USA, as Richard A. Wolf.

His mother was a housewife, while his father was an advertising executive.

He was a classmate of former US President George W. Bush​.

In 1969, Wolf graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. During college, he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity.

In 1988, he founded his own TV production company,­ Wolf Films.

From 1990 to 2010, Wolf produced Law & Order, a police procedural and legal drama television series set and filmed in New York City.

He was also the executive producer for the four spinoff shows in the franchise – Law & Order: Los Angeles, Law & Order: UK, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

In 2002, Wolf received the Creative Achievement Award from NATPE.

In 2012, Wolf, alongside Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, created Chicago Fire, a drama TV series that explores the lives of the firefighters of the Chicago Fire Department.

Chicago Fire is the first installment of Wolf’s Chicago franchise which also includes – Chicago Justice, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D.

In 2012, Wolf made a guest appearance as himself in the TV series ”Family Guy.”
