Everything We Know About HBO’s Harry Potter Series

HBO’s Harry Potter series now has a premiere date, two trailers and a cast big enough to fill the Great Hall.

I’ve followed it since HBO announced it in 2023, and plenty of early guesses about it missed.

This is what HBO and the people making it have confirmed so far.

When does HBO’s Harry Potter series premiere?

Season 1 arrives on Friday, December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.

Its title is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the British name of the first book, and it runs 8 episodes.

Christmas Day caught people off guard.

Most coverage pointed to 2027 until HBO dropped the date with its first teaser on March 25, 2026.

As of late October, HBO had not said whether episodes 2 to 8 come weekly or in one batch.

A weekly run from a Friday start puts the finale in February 2027.

WhereToWatch.tv reports a world premiere in Leicester Square during the week of December 13, but HBO has not confirmed it.

One book, one season

HBO calls the show a faithful adaptation, with one season per novel.

Seven books means seven seasons, and Warner Bros. Discovery has described the whole thing as a decade-long project.

Filming on season 1 started in July 2025 at Warner Bros.

Studios Leavesden, the lot where the films were shot. That season has now wrapped.

Gary Oldman, the films’ Sirius Black, told EW he expects the series to be “pretty much word-for-word” with the books.

Eight episodes for the shortest novel in the saga leaves space for things the 2001 movie cut, like Peeves the poltergeist and Snape’s potion riddle.

Who is in the cast?

Harry, Ron and Hermione went to newcomers.

Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry, Alastair Stout is Ron and Arabella Stanton is Hermione.

HBO first showed the 3 of them together in May 2025.

For the adults, HBO went with faces viewers know.

John Lithgow is Dumbledore, Janet McTeer plays McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is Snape and Nick Frost is Hagrid.

Luke Thallon plays Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse is Filch, Sirine Saba is Professor Sprout, and Warwick Davis is back as Flitwick, a part he played in the films.

Elsewhere in the cast, Lox Pratt is Draco and Johnny Flynn plays his father, Lucius. Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby are Petunia and Vernon Dursley, Rory Wilmot is Neville, and Bertie Carvel plays Cornelius Fudge.

Lithgow did not say yes quickly.

He told ScreenRant the role is “going to define me for the last chapter of my life,” and joked that he will be about 87 at the wrap party. On BBC’s The One Show he admitted some people were unhappy that a American got the most English wizard of all, and summed up his mood as “Very excited. Very intimidated.”

He has said publicly that he disagrees with some of J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender people. He signed on anyway.

Essiedu got the ugliest reaction of anyone.

He told The Sunday Times about race-fuelled death threats after his casting, and added: “But the abuse fuels me.”

Jason Isaacs, Lucius in the movies, defended him at FanExpo in Denver and called Essiedu one of the best actors he has ever seen.

Essiedu has never watched the films. He knew the books from childhood, when his mum brought him to the library in the holidays because a babysitter cost money she did not have.

What the trailers show

The first teaser gave us Harry in the cupboard under the stairs and Ron on the train asking, “Are you really Harry Potter?” It also had a grey, washed-out look that fans complained about.

The second trailer landed on September 2, 2026, with warmer color and less silent shots, since Harry, Ron, Hermione and the core teachers all get dialogue.

It shows the Sorting Hat, a Quidditch pitch, the invisibility cloak and Snape putting Harry down in class. Hermione is bossy, close to how Rowling wrote her.

I prefer the second one by a mile.

The teaser looked like someone filmed Hogwarts through a dusty window.

Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner. She wrote on Succession and His Dark Materials, and Succession director Mark Mylod directs several episodes. With the season 2 renewal, HBO named Jon Brown co-showrunner.

J.K. Rowling is an executive producer, next to David Heyman, who produced all 8 films, and Neil Blair, her agent.

Season 2: Chamber of Secrets

HBO renewed the series on May 6, 2026, more than 7 months before season 1 airs.

Season 2 adapts Chamber of Secrets and is due to start filming this fall.

Gilderoy Lockhart has already changed hands.

Nicholas Hoult was announced first, but scheduling conflicts pushed him out about 2 weeks later, and Kit Harington got the part.

He voiced Lockhart in Audible’s full-cast audiobooks in late 2025 and told Collider: “I’m a huge Potter fan.”

In September, HBO added Lenny Rush, 17, as Dobby and Billy Barratt as teenage Tom Riddle.

Bonnie Hill is the new Ginny, replacing Gracie Cochrane, which plays her in season 1 but left before season 2.

HBO wants season 2 fast.

Network boss Casey Bloys told The Times: “Our goal is to not have a huge gap,” since the young cast keeps growing.

He ruled out yearly seasons because the show is so big, and season 2 has no release date.

The first film turns 25 this month

While fans wait for Christmas, the original movie has a birthday. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone opened in cinemas in November 2001, so it’s 25th anniversary falls this month.

Rupert Grint, Ron in all 8 films, wrote a letter to Alastair Stout before filming began.

He told the BBC he saw it as “a passing of the baton.”

After seeing new footage this September, he called the experience trippy, since the films do not feel that far away to him.

“I think it looks good,” he said. The Tab was not convinced by his tone.
