Hoffman joined Apple as the fifth member of the Macintosh team in 1980 as part of Jef Raskin’s initial team of Brian Howard, Bud Tribble, and Burrell Smith.
At Apple, Joanna managed the International Marketing Team and wrote the User Interface Guidelines for the Mac.
“I was first hired by Jef Raskin in 1980, and I was supposed to be working on user interface testing and user interface design for the Macintosh which at the time was a research project at Apple,” Hoffman revealed in an interview.
She added:
“Shortly after I joined Steve Jobs came and took over the project and decided that it should be the next Apple product and then everything changed. The first thing I did was to write the original business plan that he [Steve Jobs] presented to the Board of Directors and the executive staff to get the funding for the division.”

In 2015, she started to work at NeXT after Steve Jobs left Apple.

During her time working with Steve Jobs, Joanna became known as one of the few people who could challenge him, and Jobs respected her for it. She won an unofficial internal award at Apple given to the person who could best stand up to the Apple co-founder.
”Steve had a very strong vision of what he intended to do, and I don’t want to label him as a mere visionary, because, frankly speaking, visionaries are one in a million,” Hoffman said. She added: ”He was definitely one in a billion.”

During the early 90s, she served as the vice president of marketing at the software and electronics company General Magic, where Hoffman was responsible for developer strategy and product marketing.
Hoffman retired in 1995 to spend more time with her boys.
