Keanu Reeves is a Canadian/American actor and philanthropist of English, Hawaiian, Japanese, and Portuguese descent.

He was born in the Middle East and then moved to North America when he was quite young.

His dual citizenship comes from his life growing up in Canada and his US green card, which was obtained via his American stepfather.

While he had dreams of becoming a Canadian national hockey player during his younger years, it was ultimately his first acting job at 15 that solidified what would become his future career.

Personal Life

Born in Lebanon in 1964, Keanu and his family moved to Toronto, Canada, when he was very young.

The son of an English costume designer and performer (his mother), and a Hawaiian-born father, his dad left the family when he was 3.

Keanu only saw him once more at 13 years old and then never laid eyes on him again.

He met his ex-wife Jennifer Syme while she was working as a personal assistant to director David Lynch in the ’90s.

They fell in love and got married. Jennifer became pregnant shortly after, but their daughter (Ava Archer) was stillborn 8 months into their pregnancy on December 24, 1999. The situation devastated the couple, who broke up shortly after.

While they remained friends after that, grief would come back to claim Keanu again sooner than expected.

While leaving a party held by Marylin Manson in April 2001, Jennifer passed away from a car crash that took place on the streets of LA.

She lost control of her vehicle, which then crashed into several parked cars. She was 28 years old.  

While that was one of the most impactful events of his life, he still had to develop his strength for the other things life would throw at him.

His best friend, River Phoenix, died of an overdose in front of him when he was 23. And, his younger sister was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1991 (although after 10 years of fighting, she did fully recover).

That said, there’s been plenty of speculation over the years based on some quotes pulled from interviews he’s given.

He seems to be more spiritual than religious, claiming to believe in God but also passion and his inner self.

In 2019, during an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he was asked about what he thought happened after death.

The conversation was geared towards his personal life and grief.

He answered that the one thing he was certain of was that those people who loved the person who departed would miss them the most.

Ultimately, it seems Buddism, however, has been what left the biggest indent in his spiritual journey.

While he doesn’t exactly consider himself a Buddhist, the basis of the religion is as close to what he believes as any other option out there.

He was first introduced to the ideology while filming Little Buddha in 1993 alongside Bridget Fonda and Chris Isaak.

He found it reflected his thoughts about the human experience the same he saw it: by understanding the concept of feelings and impermanence. And by trying to acknowledge other human beings and where their thoughts and ideals come from.

”Buddhism, the recognition of the law of cause and effect also known as Karma, it’s a fundamental key to understand how you’ve created your world with actions of your body speech and mind,” Keanu explains in an interview. ”It is incredibly empowering to know that your future is in your hands.”
