Michael Calta was born on September 18, 1971, in Staten Island, New York.

In the late 80s, Calta and his family moved from New York to the Tampa Bay, Florida area, and Mike enrolled at Pasco-Hernando Community College.

Calta didn’t really know what he wanted to do, but he knew he wanted to be in movies or television.

His plan was to get his associate degree and head to Orlando, where Universal Studios was opening.

Growing up, Calta said that his family struggled a lot financially.

“I was a really poor kid growing up. Like…we were really poor,” he once said on air.

Growing up with money troubles gave Calta some strange ideas about success early on in his career.

He was used to having so little that when he scored his first job with a salary of $30k, he thought he’d made it in the world.

It’s also taught him about gratitude—and not taking his success for granted. He is thankful for the comfortable life he gets to lead, and knows that it could be gone at any second.

Fame is fickle, and Calta isn’t taking any risks—he started the Calta Family Foundation to help underprivileged kids get the hand-up they need to succeed in life. The foundation offers advocacy for Tampa Bay youth.

The Road to the Top

Movies and television might have been the goal for Calta, but he ended up working as an intern for 93.3 WFLZ in Tampa instead.

It was 1992, he was a 21 year old with a plan—and an engaging personality.

The charismatic young Calta joined WFLZ’s Bubba the Love Sponge Show—a popular evening segment that featured Todd Alan Clem, the original Bubba the Love Sponge.

The show was a huge hit, and in 1996 it was moved to EXTB 98 Rock.

Four years later, after a falling out between Mike—who was going by Cowhead at that point—and Todd Clem.

Mike was fired from the show.

Infinity Broadcasting snatched Calta up in August of that year to produce The Sport Chix—a show which featured Playboy Playmate Lynn Austin, Sports Arena Tina, and BL.

Then came The AW and Cowhead Show, and a sports talk show on Sports Radio 1010.

The Replacement Show followed, with Brent Pearson, Kevin Wurster, Pete ‘The Sports Geek’ Larios, and Amy Beckman.

After some tensions—and challenging behavior on Mike’s part—he was fired by Infinity.

By 2006, he was being fired again, this time from The Cowhead Show on Clear Channel.

From there, it was on to the station Calta would call home for the next decade and a half.

The Bone

Mike Calta’s new Cowhead show was launched on 102.5 The Bone in the summer of 2006, before being moved to a different slot in 2008 to make way for Bubba the Love Sponge’s return to radio.

Having earned a reputation as a shock jock—much like Calta’s idol, Howard Stern—meant his career at The Bone was never smooth sailing.

In 2013, the station was sued for $6 million for using the photo of a child with Down’s Syndrome with the heading Retarded News.

Over the years, Calta has interviewed some pretty famous people—like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michael Rapaport, and Fred Durst. But his favorite celebrity was comedian and actor Tracy Morgan.
