Rumiko released her first full-length series, Urusei Yatsura, in June 1978, on Shōnen Sunday.

The series tells the story of Ataru Moroboshi, a lecherous and unpopular high school student who is chosen by aliens to represent Earth in a game of tag. If he loses, the Earth will be destroyed. However, Ataru’s task is complicated by the fact that one of the aliens, Lum, has fallen in love with him and wants to marry him.

“Urusei Yatsura is a title I had been dreaming about since I was very young,” she said.

Urusei Yatsura was adapted by Kitty Films into an animated television series. In addition, several video games have been produced based on the series.

Maison Ikkoku

In 1980, Rumiko started her second major series, Maison Ikkoku.

The story follows the lives of the residents of a boarding house called Maison Ikkoku. The protagonist, Kyoko Otonashi, started managing the broken-down boarding house. She meets Yusaku Godai, a student who lives in the complex, and the two quickly become friends. As the series progresses, the residents of Maison Ikkoku experience a wide range of challenges and adventures.

Maison Ikkoku was adapted into a ninety-six-episode anime television series, and the video game, Maison Ikkoku: Omoide no Photograph, was released in 1986.

Ranma ½

In 1987, she began working on the manga series Ranma ½. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday from August 1987 to March 1996, and published in 38 tankōbon volumes. 

It centers around the story of Ranma Saotome, a teenage martial arts prodigy who becomes cursed after falling into a magical spring while training in China. The manga has been adapted into two anime series, and it was licensed by Viz Media for English-language releases in North America.

Inuyasha

Rumiko published the manga in the magazine Weekly Shonen Sunday between November 1996 and June 2008. It won the 47th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 2002.

The series tells the story of Inuyasha, a half-demon, and Kagome Higurashi, a human girl who falls into a well that transports her to the feudal era of Japan. Together, they search for the shards of the Shikon Jewel, which can be used to make anyone’s wishes come true. Along the way, they are joined by Miroku, a Buddhist monk with a cursed wind tunnel in his hand; Sango, a demon slayer whose family was killed by Naraku; and Shippo, a young fox demon.

The manga was adapted into two anime television series. 

Rin-ne

The Rin-ne manga series was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday from 2009 to 2017, with its chapters collected in 40 tankōbon volumes. The series was licensed for English release by Viz Media.

The story follows Sakura Mamiya, a girl who has the ability to see spirits. She meets Rinne Rokudo, a boy of mixed human and shinigami heritage, who helps guide the dead to the other side.

Mao

Mao has been serialized since May 2019. Viz Media licensed the series for English release in North America in 2021.

In 2019, Takahashi won the grand prize at the Angouleme Comics Festival, and a Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2020.
