His dad owned an auto repair business.

He had an older sister named Uzura.

In 1978, Toriyama published his first manga, the one-shot Wonder Island. It was followed by three more one-shots – Wonder Island 2, Today’s Highlight Island, and Tomato the Cutesy Gumshoe. All were published in Weekly Shōnen Jump.

In 1982, Akira Toriyama married Nachi Mikami, a former Japanese manga artist. She is referred to as “Yoshimi” in the final volume of Dr. Slump.

The couple had two children – son (Sasuke) and daughter (Kikka).
