Spencer Paysinger is a former American football linebacker. In 2011 was signed by the New York Giants in the NFL draft.
He went on to play for the Miami Dolphins, the New York Jets, and finally, the Carolina Panthers. In 2017, he retired from his football career.
Paysinger was the inspiration and consulting producer for the CW series All American, which gained huge popularity in America.
The Origin Story
Paysinger was born on June 28th, 1988.
He grew up in South LA, where he attended Beverly Hills High School.
During his time there, he became captain of the football team, playing as a wide receiver and linebacker.
Paysinger has recalled growing up in a rough neighborhood, where he was surrounded by violence and drugs.
He escaped his dangerous surroundings when he received a football scholarship for Oregon University.
During his senior year there, Paysinger became captain of the college football team.
In 2011, he signed a $1.398 million contract with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent.
Because of this, Paysinger didn’t get the playing time he had hoped for. In the 15 games he played, he racked up 12 tackles in total.
But in 2012, the Giants won the Super Bowl. In the following three seasons, Paysinger had 104 tackles in 47 games.
By the 2014 season, he was made quarterback for the team and had his first and last NFL sack. He continued to play for the Giants until the end of his contract.
On April 2nd, 2015, Paysinger signed a yearlong contract with the Miami Dolphins and was released in 2016. In these two seasons, he secured 57 tackles.
On June 9th, 2017, the New York Jets signed Paysinger, but before he could play in the regular season, he was released on September 1st, 2017.
By December 5th, the Carolina Panthers signed him, and he played a total of three games before being released on December 29th.
Following this, Paysinger announced he would be retiring from football altogether.
When asked about his downtime, Paysinger said that “the escape to me is as important as playing,” as he had seen many NFL players lose themselves after retiring from football.
For this reason, he expanded his options by writing a one-page treatment highlighting the darkness of his childhood.
Warner Bros. Television President Peter Roth read his treatment and worked with Paysinger for a year developing the pilot, which CW agreed to produce and title All America.
The series is loosely based on his time at high school and his football career.
He was heavily involved in the series as a producer and even had a small role as Assistant Coach Davis in several episodes of the show.
