Wambach helped the US win gold medals at the 2004 and 2012 Summer Olympics.


She was born on June 2, 1980, in Rochester, New York, as Mary Abigail Wambach. 

Abby is the youngest of seven children.

At age 4, Abby began playing soccer.

At age 7, Wambach was put on the boys’ soccer team.

From 1994 to 1998, she attended Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester.

After high school, Abby went to the University of Florida. There, she played for Florida Gators women’s soccer team and set the school and SEC records for most career goals (96).

She earned her first cap for the US in 2001.

Broken Leg

Abby broke her left leg in the USA’s final tune-up for the 2008 Olympics during a match with Brazil.

“I put my heart and soul into this game every day, but sometimes accidents happen,” she said at the time.

On July 17, 2008, Wambach underwent surgery to repair her broken leg.

In April 2009, she was voted WPS Player of the Week. Abby had two goals in Washington Freedom’s win over FC Gold Pride. “At the end of the day, it’s about scoring goals,” Wambach said after the match.

In July 2009, Abby scored her 100th international goal.

In 2011, Wambach finished 3rd in the voting for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year.

In early January 2013, Wambach was voted the Fifa Women’s World Player of the Year at the Ballon d’Or gala in Zurich.

From 2013 to 2014, Wambach played for Western New York Flash.

In March 2015, she decided not to play in the 2015 National Women’s Soccer League season to focus on the upcoming Women’s World Cup.

In July 2015, Abby helped the US team defeat Japan and win the 2015 FIFA World Cup.

On October 27, 2015, Wambach and the US women’s national soccer team were honored at the White House. “Playing like a girl means being the best,” Barack Obama said during his speech.

Wambach decided to retire from soccer at the end of 2015.

At the time, Abby was the sport’s highest all-time international goal scorer (184 goals) for both women and men.

“In my retirement, I’ve learned that what I gained on the field in terms of self-esteem is priceless, and then now, I find myself doing things that I just experience joy,” Abby said for Today in a 2021 interview. “I think, especially women, we forget to have fun. And so if you are struggling to figure out how to get out, how to be active, don’t worry about the word sport if that scares you.”

Arrested for DUI

In April 2016, Wambach was arrested on a DUI charge. Police stopped her after she ran a red light at Taylor Street and Southwest 13th Avenue.

“I take full responsibility for my actions,” Wambach wrote on her Facebook after release. “This is all on me.”

On September 13, 2016, Wambach published the book – “Forward: A Memoir.”

In her book, Wambach detailed her journey from a girl in Rochester to a world-class athlete.

NYC Marathon

In 2021, Wambach completed the NYC Marathon in 3:44:25.

Her goal to finish the marathon was four hours.

“It was incredible,” she later tweeted.


In October 2013, Abby Wambach married her first wife, Sarah Huffman, on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

The two divorced in 2016.

In February 2017, Abby announced her engagement to Glennon Doyle, an American author and the founder of Together Rising.
