Dan Reeves was an American football running back and coach who played for eight seasons for the Dallas Cowboys.

Biography

He was born on January 19, 1944, in Rome, Georgia.

Reeves grew up in the Americus, in the southwestern part of the state.

During high school, Dan participated in basketball, baseball, and football.

Reeves attended the University of South Carolina. There, he was the starting quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks. During that period, he set 10 school records. 

In 1961, during his senior year, Dan suffered a broken collar bone.

Dallas Cowboys

In 1965, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent.

Dan’s best year came in 1966 when he scored 16 touchdowns.

In 1968, Reeves tore his knee ligaments and missed the remainder of the season.

Reeves played there for eight years, all under head coach Tom Landry. In addition, Dan served as a player-coach in the last three seasons. 

In 1977, Dan was inducted into the University of South Carolina’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Denver Broncos

In 1981, he took over as Broncos coach. Dan was 37 at the time, making him the youngest head coach in the NFL at the time.

He stayed with the Broncos until 1992.

His overall record in Denver was 110-73-1.

Reeves and John Elway made three Super Bowl appearances and won five division titles.

New York Giants

In 1993, Dan took over the Giants. In the same year, Reeves was named Associated Press Coach of the Year.

He was the head coach until 1996.

Atlanta Falcons

In 1997, Reeves became head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

In December 1998, Reeves underwent a quadruple bypass surgery due to the fact he had been feeling some discomfort the past weeks. He had less serious heart problems in 1990 and 1991. Reeves returned to the sidelines in less than a month.

In the 1998 season, he led the Falcons to their first Super Bowl appearance in history.

In 2003, he was fired by the Atlanta Falcons.

Reeves had one year left on his contract. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips took over as head coach.

Arthur Blank, the owner of the Atlanta Falcons, said: “Dan’s record in the NFL speaks for itself.”

In 2009, he became a consultant with the Cowboys organization for a short time.

In 2010, he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

On January 1, 2022, Dan Reeves passed away due to complications from dementia. He was 77.

Reeves would have turned 78 on January 19.

“He made an indelible mark on the League and all of the people he played with,” said John Mara, the Giants’ president.

“Dan Reeves leaves a lasting legacy in our game as a player and coach,” Blank said.

“His legacy will continue through his many friends, players, and fans,” his family said in a statement.
