Like most people, Safi tried his hand at many things on his way to the top.

In his late teens, Alaa took out the top spot at the Taekwondo World Championship in Paris for the under 18’s category.

From there, he young over-achiever got a job offer to work as a stuntman in a French television show.

He accepted the job, which led to another offer—this time in India.

From India, he went on to Thailand, learning more about the demands of such a physical career—and also learning about the film industry operations around him.

Acting caught his eye, and he set his sights on moving into that side of the industry.

He returned home to study at the Atelier International de Theatre, training in comedy and securing small roles in upcoming movies and television productions.

One of his earliest roles allowed him to develop two skills at once—he worked as a Stuntman on Day After Day and also talked to the show’s producers to put him in front of the cameras as a character.

It paid off for the tenacious youngster, and he went on to a role in 2005’s Mercury Man in Thailand—where he learned Thai.

Next came parts in For Her, Treason, and The Missionary on the big screen.

By 2021, Safi had racked up an impressive list of film credits (23 by the end of 2021) in movies like The Mummy, American Assassin, Murder on the Orient Express, and A Butterfly Kiss.

His role in Murder on the Orient Express would garner Safi a Best Male Actor award at the Festival National du Film Hyeres.

Since then, his acting has also scored him a big win in Hong Kong—the HK Film Award for Best Action Choreography.

Wife

Alaa Safi married his long-time girlfriend, Elena Borgogni, on August 20, 2016.

The pair met in France when Elena—who is a classically trained musician and performer—was starring in a Daniel-François-Esprit Auber opera.

Borgogni, who also has a passion for film, joined her new husband for his next project—the film The 25th Frame.

The film, which was written by Safi, explores a young man’s quest for identity and his struggles with insecurity, resistance, and challenges along his journey to becoming a great actor.

Safi himself said that the film was a way for him to exercise his own demons in that respect, and to encourage others to better deal with setbacks.

He and his wife launched an Indiegogo and GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the film’s production.

They raised just over $10,000 US dollars on Indiegogo, or half of their goal amount, by the October 2022 deadline.
