Alström was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, alongside her sister Sara.
She began her career at the young age of 5, initially appearing in stage plays. When Hanna was 6, she appeared in Staffan Götestam’s play Gränsland at Puckteatern and at the Gröna Lund Theatre. Alström later began her career in film with her debut role in the 1988 film Gull-Pian.
