What is Bruce Makowsky’s net worth?
Bruce Makowsky is an American entrepreneur, real estate developer, and businessman who has a net worth of $400 million. He is best known for listing a home he developed in Bel Air on the market for $250 million.
He was born in 1956.
In the 90s, Makowsky and his wife founded a leather goods empire in New York selling designer handbags through their flagship labels Tignanello, B. Makowsky, and Kathy Van Zeeland Handbags.
In 2008, they sold the company to Li & Fung Ltd, based in Hong Kong. Li & Fung stated that Makowsky and Kathy Van Zeeland will remain co-presidents of the Van Zeeland businesses.
Later, Bruce moved to Los Angeles and founded BAM Luxury Development, a world-class design and development company specializing in quality, luxury, and finer details.
In 2013, Makowsky bought a house above the Sunset Strip for $5.3 million. In April 2014, Bruce sold the house for $19 million.
Also in 2014, he sold the “ultimate billionaire bachelor pad” to Swedish video game programmer and the creator of the Minecraft video game Markus Persson for $70 million. The house has eight bedrooms and 15 bathrooms. Note – Markus sold his company, Mojang, to Microsoft Corp. for $2.5 billion.
The Billionaire (mansion)
In 2017, Makowsky set the record for the most expensive home listed in the US by listing a mansion (called Billionaire) he developed in Bel Air on the market for $250 million.
”I wanted to redefine what super-high-end luxury homes are all about,” he said. Bruce also stated that about 3,000 people in the world could afford to buy the mansion.
”The reason it’s $250 million is because of all the work for the past four years of having 300 people inside here, the art curations inside the house,” he commented for NBC Los Angeles. Makowsky added: ”We have a 270-degree view from the snow-covered mountains all the way down to LA.”
In 2013, he purchased the land for over $11 million from former professional football player Michael Strahan. Later, Bruce demolished an existing house. Then, the four-story 38,000 square-foot mega-mansion located in Bel Air was built in four years by a team of 300 people.

”This house is more like a land yacht,” Bruce stated during an interview. He went on to say: ”It didn’t make sense to me that somebody would spend $300 million on a boat that they use eight weeks a year and live in a house that only cost $20 million or $30 million.”
Some of the feats of the mansion include:
- a four-lane Louis Vuitton bowling alley;
- two fully-stocked champagne and wine cellars;
- a massage studio;
- a candy room filled with towering cylinders of sweets;
- five bars;
- vintage copper-and-gold gas cans that date from 1892;
- 130 artworks;
- an 85-foot infinity pool;
- a fitness center;
- a 40-seat movie theater that has a 4K projector, a sound system with 57 speakers and 16 subwoofers, a 22-foot screen;
- a Hobie Cat sailboat;
- three kitchens;
- a helicopter that was used in the mid-80s action military series Airwolf;
- 21 bathrooms;
- $30-million fleet of exotic cars, including a custom Rolls-Royce, a vintage Allard, and a Bugatti Veyron;
- 12 bedrooms.
”Every inch of the house is curated with the ultimate toys, entertainment, stone, wine, artwork, everything,” Bruce said. He continued: ”It’s all about the feeling and experience you get when you’re in the house.”
In 2018, Makowsky reduced the price to $188 million, and $150 million in 2019. Watch a video of the mansion here.
In February 2019, Zillow’s website falsely showed that ”The Billionaire” sold for $110 million, then $90.54 million, then $94.3 million. Later, Makowsky sued Zillow, seeking $60 million, citing permanent harm to the property’s perception.
On April 19, Zillow filed to dismiss the suit.
In October 2019, the mansion was sold for $94 million.
In February 2020, Judge Otis D. Wright dismissed with prejudice 924 Bel Air LLC’s claim against Zillow for negligence in a written ruling handed down this week.
