His beliefs initially started to change after a panic attack on national television during a broadcast of Good Morning America.
“Even more embarrassing than freaking out on national television is actually the back story, in other words, what produced the panic attack—I think at the root of it is something that everybody at Yale for sure shares, which is ambition,” Harris confessed in April 2018 at Yale University.
Additionally, Harris revealed that drug abuse (cocaine and ecstasy) also contributed to the on-air panic attack.

He later read the books “A New Earth” and “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. He also discovered mindfulness meditation.
“I went to Toronto and interviewed Eckhart Tolle, and the first thing I did was ask him you know what do you do about the voice in the head, and he took a beat and said, ‘take one conscious breath,’ and the voice in my head was like, what the hell does that mean and I asked him, again and again, you know what seriously what do you do about this … what do you do, but and he seemed unwilling or unable to say anything that made any sense to me,” Dan said at the same event at Yale.
In 2009, Dan received an Emmy Award for his Nightline report.
