David Phelps is an American Christian music vocalist who has won Dove and Grammy awards as a member of the Gaither Vocal Band.

Biography

He was born on October 21, 1969, in Texas, USA, as David Norris Phelps.

His sister, Sherri Proctor, passed away from cancer in September 2012. She used to sing backup vocals for him on tour.

As a teenager, David sang in church.

”I come from a family where music was really important – my mother had this great operatic soprano voice, and my sister, who is older than me, plays classic trumpet, so music is a big thing for us,” Phelps told Broadway World in November 2020.

In 1988, he graduated from Tomball High School.

In 1992, David earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Baylor University.

In 1994, Phelps released his debut solo album, entitled – ”Journey to Grace.”

In 1997, he joined the Gaither Vocal Band, a southern gospel vocal group that started out recording contemporary Christian music in the 80s.

In 1998, the Gaither Vocal Band released their first album, Still the Greatest Story Ever Told, with David as part of their lineup.

In 2001, Phelps appeared in one episode of the TV series ”Touched by an Angel” as Kyle Winslow.

In 2005, David left the Gaither Vocal Band to focus on his solo career. 

In 2006, he released two albums – ”No More Night: Live in Birmingham” and ”Legacy of Love: David Phelps Live!”

In January 2008, he appeared on the reality TV series ”Extreme Makeover Home Edition” for the Woodhouse family.

In 2009, Phelps received a Dove Award nomination for Male Vocalist of the Year. In the same year, David returned as a member of the Gaither Vocal Band.

In 2010, David released two more albums – ”Family Band” and ”Christmas With David Phelps.”

In 2017, he left the Gaither Vocal Band for the second time.

In 2018, his album ”It Must Be Christmas” was released via Spring House.

David Phelps is married to Lori Purtle.

”This guy has been my Valentine for close to 30 years,” Lori wrote on her Instagram in 2018. She added: ”He’s a keeper.”

David and Lori have four children – Coby, Grant, Maggie Beth, and Callie.
