Biography

He was born on June 11, 1959, in Blackbird Leys, Oxfordshire, England, as James Hugh Calum Laurie, to William and Patricia Laurie.

His father was medical doctor who won a gold medal at the 1948 London Olympics.

At age 6, Hugh began taking piano lessons.

He attended Selwyn College at the University of Cambridge, where he studied anthropology.

In 1977, he won the National Junior Championship for rowing.

“I rowed for Cambridge,” he later said. “I was pretty good at that.”

Laurie rose to fame in the 1980s through his comedic double act with Stephen Fry.
