The Origin Story

Isla Johnston was born sometime in 2007 in London, England, and was later raised in Cambridgeshire, England.

As she is an up-and-coming actress, there is not much known about her family.

She has always been interested in the performative arts, so her parents ensured she took acting classes while attending school.

Aside from school and acting lessons, she spent a lot of her time horse-riding, swimming, tennis, and skiing. Isla naturally gravitates toward outdoor sports and prefers to be productive with one of her many hobbies.

Since she had her eyes set on becoming a professional actress, her parents signed her up with Shepherd Management,” a talent agency based out of London, England.

Being signed with an agent opens up doors to more auditions for local casting calls, which helped her progress in the following years.

Auditions were a regular occurrence for her, and she signed up for anything from commercials to lead roles in television shows and series.

While she partook in a few smaller projects as a child, her first significant role was in 2018.

The casting directors for the British crime-drama series National Treasure loved her energy and spark, so they immediately cast her in a minor role, playing Fiona. Due to it being such a minor role, she wasn’t given enough time on camera to be listed as one of the prominent cast members.

When the filming for National Treasure wrapped up, Isla was back with her studio finding any audition she would be qualified to audition for. She heard that Doctors, a British television series had a casting call for minor roles that had opened up.

She immediately auditioned for the character, Sarah Kemp, and she successfully landed the role. In episode 182 of season 20, she portrayed Sarah’s character, titled “Speechless.”

While this role was the same as her previous in that she wasn’t given much on-camera experience, it gave her the experience and recognition she needed to progress forward.

The year 2020 was when her career began to take off. There was a big casting call in London for a new Netflix series titled The Queen’s Gambit, and one of the roles would be ideally suited for Isla.

So, of course, she attended the audition, and just like the previous ones, she captured the attention of the casting agents.

Isla was successful and landed her first significant role, playing young Beth Harmon.

Since the character she would portray had a lot more camera time, she was classified as one of the leading co-stars, which played a big part in propelling her career to where it is today.

The television series did so well that it was an immediate hit with Netflix Britain, America, and Canada.

In addition, due to the outstanding actor performances, the film received a ragging 96% from Rotten Tomatoes, 86% from IMDb, 80% from Common Sense Media, and 97% from Goole users.

Not bad for a new film that she had a significant part in putting together.

The miniseries aired on Netflix for one and final season, so immediately after filming and film promotion, Isla was back with her agent setting up new auditions.

Near the end of 2020, there was a new television series in the making titled Invasion.

The science-fiction script was ready to start casting calls around the same time Isla wrapped up The Queen’s Gambit.

She was in line and prepared to land another significant role when she heard.

She auditioned for the role of Lucy Spencer and, of course, was given the part. Her character was portrayed in four episodes, including; “Going Home,” The King Is Dead,” “Orion,” and “Crash,” which was a significant amount of screen time.

And just like her previous roles, she captivated the audience and outperformed herself.

While the series did not perform as well as anticipated with respect to media ratings, it received relatively good public feedback. In addition, Isla’s exceptional performance did not go unnoticed.

From here, Isla landed a role in a short thriller film Unmourned, something different than her previous one.

She auditioned to portray Cara and got the role right away.

What differentiates this role from her previous ones is that Cara is the leading character, meaning Isla landed her first lead role to play the main character. The film portrays her as a damaged child who spends her days in a children’s hospital.

In addition to filming Unmourned, Isla landed another role for the television drama series “Life After Life,” where she plays the young Ursula Todd. Her character will be portrayed in episodes “1.2,” “1.3,” and “1.4.”
