The Origin Story
Kenneth Roy Feinberg was born on October 23, 1945, in Brockton, Massachusetts, the U.S.
He attended the University of Massachusets and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history.
While attending school, he was involved in theater and had a short-lived consideration to pursue an acting career.
Instead, he attended New York University to pursue a J.D. degree. As a student, he assumed the role of Articles Editor of the Law Review.
Immediately after graduating, he landed his first job as a clerk for the New York State Court of Appeals Judge Stanley Fuld.
Following this, Feinberg became an assistant attorney for the Department of Justice, working alongside then-mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Feinberg worked as an assistant and administrator for the late U.S. Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy, and later became Kennedy’s chief of staff.

Feinberg gained a myriad amount of experience in a short period, and by 1980, he was ready to build his own practice.
With the help of a few other prominent attorneys, he helped found Kaye Scholer LLP’s Washington office.
He practiced there for nearly 12 years before moving on to his own practice.
Feinberg Group (now Feinberg Rozen LLP) offers complex litigation services, processing and administering claims, financial and investment services, and ADR program design.
The firm is still in operation as of 2022.
In 2001, Feinberg was appointed by the then-Attorney General John Ashcroft as Special Master of the fund for the Sept. 11 victims’ surviving families. The case naturally inherited global attention, and Fengberig was at its center. Due to the unprecedented circumstances of the case, he took it on pro-bono for the first 33 months, a service he hadn’t offered before.
Throughout the case, Feinberg was under scrutiny from critics and the families and was often referred to as “aloof and arrogant.”
He admits a certain amount of anger directed at him, which he was unaware of and should have been more apprehensive and sensitive toward.
Over years of deliberation, pushback, and quarrels, Feinberg and his team settled on a $7 billion payout to over 5000 families included in the lawsuit.
Feinberg’s book “What Is Life Worth?” was published in 2005. It inspired the 2020 Netflix hit movie “Worth,” covering Feinberg’s story of the case.

In 2007, Feinberg was appointed as the chief administrator to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund (HSMF), taking it on pro-bono.
The fund was created in response to donations sent to the Virginia Tech university in the aftermath of the campus tragedy on April 16, 2017.
Feinberg quickly became recognized as an unwavering legal force and was regularly recommended to cover America’s “next high-profile case.”

Following the Virginia Tech case, he was appointed by the U.S. Treasury Department on June 10, 2009, as Special Master for Executive Compensation of companies and their top executives who received federal bailout assistance. H

On June 16, 2010, President Barack Obama appointed Feinberg to oversee the compensation of top executives at bailed-out banks concerning the B.P. oil spill.
There was, however, sweeping pushback with this arrangement when it came to the public eye that Feinberg was representing both B.P. and the families of the victims. Despite the asserted conflict of interest, he remained on the case and eventually settled it.
Feinberg’s overseeing of high-profile cases is what he became known for, and they would continue for the duration of this career.
Following the B.P. case, he managed countless more, including the Penn State Settlement, Aurora Victim Relief Fund, the Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation, the 2014 General Motors Car Recall, the 2016 Volkswagen Emission Scandal, among many others.
His most recent public case was in 2019, when he worked pro bono on the United Methodist Church case. He was appointed to mediate the impasses between representatives of factions within the church.
The case made national and international headlines due to the church’s stance on homosexuality. There was tremendous pushback from the American public, which set off more attention than the case may have naturally acquired.
