The Origin Story
Lisa Murkowski was born on May 22nd, 1957, in Ketchikan, Alaska.
She was raised by her mother, Nancy Rena, and her father, Frank Murkowski.
She is of European ancestry, her great grandparents on her father’s side hailing from Poland, while her mother’s family came from Ireland and French Canada.
She frequently moved during her childhood due to her father’s job as a banker.
After completing her childhood schooling in Alaska, she attended Georgetown University and studied economics there.
Murkowski was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority while attending university and represented Alaska as the Cherry Blossom Princess in 1980.
She graduated with her degree in economics in 1980, coinciding with her father’s recent election as a member of the US senate.

Career History
Directly after graduating with J.D., Murkowski went to work as an attorney in the Anchorage District Court Clerk’s office.
That same year, she left the District Court Clerk’s office to work for a private firm in Anchorage, serving as an attorney there until 1998.
During this time, Murkowski also served on the Anchorage Mayor’s Task Force for the Homeless in 1990 and 1991.
Murkowski left her private law practice in 1998 when she was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives.
Her district included various parts of Anchorage and surrounding areas, including Elmendorf Air Force Base, Fort Richardson, and suburban parts of Eagle River-Chugiak.
She instituted legislation in 1999 for the creation of a Joint Armed Services Committee for her district and was later reelected in 2000 and 2002.
Her views were called into question by a primary opponent in the 2002 election. Despite her values being called into question in the public eye, Murkowski still won the election.
In 2003 and 2004, she was named as House Majority Leader for the legislative session during those years. She continued to serve in various political capacities over the next few years.
Murkowski’s most difficult election ran in 2010 when she had Joe Miller to contend against in the primary election for her seat in the Senate.
She stuck to her guns, and with the help of her campaign managers and staff, she was able to get re-elected for the seat again.
Murkowski was again reelected to the Senate in 2016 after securing the Republican Party nomination by a wide margin.
As a staunch criticizer of Donald Trump and his policies enacted during his presidential campaign, the future of her seat in the Senate is unsure.
”I want him to resign,” Murkowski said in January 2021. ”I allowed myself to refrain from speaking my truth.”
She plans to run again in 2022 for a fourth term, but she may face tougher opposition than she has in the past because of this.
