Patrick was an extremely gifted athlete all through grade school; he excelled in football, baseball, and basketball.
Mahomes continued to play all three sports in high school at Whitehouse School, as he felt that each of the other sports helped him improve his skills as a quarterback.
In his senior year in high school, he was ranked by Rival.com (the top evaluator of high school players), gave him a 3-star rating, and also ranked him as the 12th best dual-threat QB coming out of high school.
He would eventually sign a scholarship offer from Texas Tech University, and he went on to have a stellar college career.
The College Years
Mahomes was the big man on campus at Texas Tech University for three years (2013-2016) before he declared for the draft before his senior year of college.
However, for the three years he was on campus and on the football team, he excelled. As a freshman, he actually played baseball. However, that really didn’t last long, and he decided to devote all of his time and effort to football.
Though he didn’t start or play a full season as a freshman, he did have several spectacular games and earned him an opportunity to be the starting quarterback for his sophomore year.
He took advantage of all of his opportunities and put together a spectacular sophomore and junior years as the starting quarterback at Texas Tech University.
His junior year was filled with so many great performances, including one for the ages against Big 12 Conference opponent University of Oklahoma.
Even though the game ended in a 66-59 loss, it was one of the most spectacular performances by a college quarterback.
He threw for 734 yards passing and threw 87 passes.
His college career was capped off when the NFL Kansas City Chiefs franchise team picked him in the first round and overall 10th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Kansas City Chiefs
Mahomes didn’t rest on his laurels after joining the Kansas City Chiefs.
After signing an initial rookie contract with the Chiefs worth more than $16 million, Mahomes took his place as the backup to the team’s veteran signal-caller, Alex Smith.
He actually got his first start in his rookie season as Alex Smith was rested in the final game of the season.
He finally got his chance the next season to take over as the starter for the Chiefs, as Alex Smith left the team and signed with Washington in the off-season.
This was when the Mahomes era started in the NFL.
In his first game as the official team, starting QB ended with a win and being named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.
When the season was over, he gave a number of very prestigious awards, including the NFL MVP award. “Starting fast and finishing strong has always been the mentality here,” Mahomes told Chiefs.
