Early Life

Wilson was born in Dallas to Irish American parents who originally hailed from Massachusetts.

He spent much of his formative years in Texas with his mother, a photographer, his father, an ad executive, and his two brothers, Andrew and Luke Wilson.

The actor is a self-professed troublemaker, a personality trait no doubt responsible for his getting booted from St. Mark’s School of Texas during tenth grade.

According to an interview with Wilson, the expulsion resulted from him and a friend stealing the answers to a maths exam.

The headmaster confronted Wilson with a geometry problem that he couldn’t answer, despite Wilson’s correctly solving a similar problem on the exam.

It was pretty convincing circumstantial evidence for cheating which led the headmaster to request that Wilson give up his partners in crime.

Of course, Wilson refused, and he believes this may have been the most significant factor behind his expulsion.

As it turns out, Wilson’s father was on the school board, but even this could not save him from such an egregious act as not giving up his accomplice.

Despite both working in the media industry, Wilson’s mother and father decided their home would be better off without a TV.

Owen loved watching movies, so he would often hide out at a friend’s place to get his fix of entertainment before heading home.

Wilson and his two brothers were also very active youths and would spend a lot of time playing sports together. However, the boys also had a passion for the arts and would collaborate and perform short plays together under the name Farquhar Players, which they named after the street they lived on in Dallas.

Early Career

While Wilson admits to having a positive home life, his troublemaker attitude would often land him in hot water and eventually expulsion from St. Marks.

After his ‘dishonorable discharge from St. Marks, Wilson ended up at the New Mexico Military School.

Photos of Wilson’s stint at New Mexico show him in full school attire, and it bears a strong resemblance to something you might wear in the military.

Perhaps these photos cause people to wonder if Owen Wilson was in the military, but we know that he never served.

Parents of unruly students often use military school as a last resort or punishment to instill much-needed discipline in a wayward child.

It was not the case with Wilson, as attending New Mexico Military School was entirely his decision.

During these years, Owen doubled down on his writing to eventually become the editor of the school’s paper.

He would also meet the friend who would later introduce him to Wes Anderson, the prolific American filmmaker.

After graduation, Wilson attended the University of Texas but left just a few courses short of earning his degree. It was here that Wilson first encountered Wes Anderson, who he described as having an obnoxious fashion sense.

Despite Owen’s distaste for Anderson’s dress sense, the two soon discovered they had a shared passion for movies.

They moved into a house across campus and started collaborating on producing short films, which they would air on a public access channel in Austin.

When Wilson left college in 1991, sans degree, he moved into a house with his brothers, where Anderson would join them a short time later.

It’s in this house that the idea for ‘Bottle Rocket’ was born, the film that would launch the careers of both Wes and Owen and earn them their first movie deal with Sony Entertainment.
