Who Plays Draco Malfoy in the HBO Series?

HBO’s Harry Potter series has a new Draco Malfoy, and he arrived with almost no screen experience.

His name is Lox Pratt, he comes from Cornwall, and Draco is only his second role.

Here is who he is, how he landed the part and what he has said about playing Hogwarts’ favourite bully.

Who Is Lox Pratt?

Pratt is a British actor, born and raised in Cornwall.

HBO announced him as Draco on June 9, 2025, in the same casting round that named Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy.

He was 14 during his first press interviews in 2026.

Before acting, Lox was in a local drama group and spent his free time making films with his brothers.

His start was close to an accident.

A friend of his mum thought he should send a self-tape for the BBC’s Lord of the Flies, so he did.

His First Role Was Another Villain

Lord of the Flies came first.

The BBC adaptation, written by Jack Thorne of Adolescence and directed by Marc Munden, cast Pratt as Jack, the boy who drags the island into savagery.

He had auditioned for Ralph, the decent one. The casting team called him back for Jack, and he liked that Jack “was so different to me”.

Filming sent him to Malaysia, where he ran wild with a spear and staged coups against his frenemies.

He has a healthy view of playing a monster at 14: “It’s really important to separate yourself from the character”.

His main point is that the series will show far more of Draco than the films did.

Speaking to 1883 Magazine in February 2026, he gave the headline detail: “You get to see Draco at home”.

He would not spoil those scenes, but he said they explain why Draco is the way he is.

The films only hinted at it, with “little glints of it in the film with Lucius”.

He was blunt about the film version: “In the films, Draco is sort of 2D”. In his view, the films kept the sneer and skipped the reason for it.

In May 2026 he told Variety his 2 villains are not the same boy.

Pratt called them “two very different kinds of sadness and meanness”.

His take on Draco is a boy who is loved at home but crushed by family pressure, always falling short of his father’s expectations. Jack, by contrast, is unloved and has never needed love.

The format gives him room to show that. Tom Felton‘s Draco had about 30 minutes of screen time in total over 8 films, while HBO plans a full season for each book.

Lucius Malfoy is played by Johnny Flynn, best known recently for Netflix’s Ripley.

Pratt says the 2 of them make a good father and son on screen.

His verdict on Flynn, from his first interview ever: “He’s got a lot of aura.”

Does He Like Playing The Bad Guy?

Very much.

Asked by W Magazine if he enjoys being evil, he said: “It’s better than being stuck as the nice guy the entire time”.

The same interview had a few fun details.

His acting heroes are Florence Pugh, Cillian Murphy and Leonardo DiCaprio. He plays drums, which came in handy for the log-drumming scenes in Lord of the Flies.

He got starstruck on the Harry Potter set by John Lithgow, on the day Lithgow first tried on Dumbledore’s beard. His mum snapped the first photos of it.

Asked if he is more like a dog or a cat, he picked dog, because a dog thinks the person who feeds it is God.

What Tom Felton Told Him

The original Draco got in touch with his phone number, an offer of support and one very Slytherin tip: grab as many props as possible.

Pratt confirmed to Variety that the message reached him.

How Long Will He Play Draco?

Possibly a decade. HBO plans one season per book, so Pratt has 7 seasons of Hogwarts ahead of him if the show runs its full course.

That means he will play Draco from first year to the Battle of Hogwarts, the same arc Felton covered in 8 films.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, 2026, with 8 episodes.

HBO renewed the show in May 2026 for a second season based on Chamber of Secrets, months before the first episode aired.

If the series shows why Draco is cruel at 11, his change of heart in the later books will land much harder.
