As a kid, he was constantly in trouble.
By sixth grade, his parents had enrolled him for a semester at Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri—and the young, headstrong Alex couldn’t even blame them.
“I made life hard on my own,” he explained in an interview.
If it wasn’t for that move, Alex doesn’t know where he’d be.
He’d been kicked out of every school he’d been enrolled at up until that point, and he was the first to admit he didn’t know who he was—or what he wanted.
It didn’t help that his older brother, named Martial after his father, was a model student.
He went on to study law at Brown University, while Alex was still getting into trouble and dealing with behavioral issues.

Initially, the young rebel felt like he was being punished, but without it, he acknowledges that he may have ended up in jail eventually.
Wentworth—and its strict military-training policies—turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
It taught him discipline—an asset that would become the foundation of Alex’s success as an adult.
The academy also helped Toussaint put his energy and focus into something new—fitness.
Always an active and attractive kid, he learned the value of using his strength, fitness, and agility to do something worthwhile.

As a Peloton instructor, Toussaint’s clients often hear him talk about “No rider left behind.”

Alex often listened to instructors as they lead their classes, and was so inspired by what he was seeing that he ended up taking a big risk: he asked the gym owner if he could teach a class.
The risk was crazy and probably overly confident, but it paid off—she said yes.
Toussaint reminisced on that time in a recent interview, saying that he basically approached her and said, “Can you give me an opportunity? Can you take a chance on me?”
After that, the gym owner became one of Toussaint’s mentors.
He credits her with seeing something that he couldn’t see in himself, and for giving him the opportunity to change his path.
