Under his leadership, the church grew from 300 members to over 25,000.
He was born on May 12, 1953, in Huntersville, North Carolina, USA, as Eddie Lee Long.
In 1972, he graduated from North Mecklenburg High School in Huntersville, North Carolina.
In 1986, Eddie received his M.A. degree in divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center.
New Birth Missionary Baptist Church
In 1987, he became pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church with a congregation consisting of about 300 members.
It was founded in 1939 in Scottdale as Travelers Rest Baptist Church.
Less than 4 years later, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church had grown to over 8,000 members.
In 1988, Long published a book titled – ”I Don’t Want Delilah, I Need You!.”
In 2002, Long became a member of the North Carolina Central University Board of Trustees.
In 2006, George H. W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush attended the funeral of the widow of Rev.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — Coretta Scott King — at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.
In 2008, Long made a donation of $1 million to his alma mater, North Carolina Central.
In 2009, he released the album – ”The Kingdom, Vol. 1” via Ultimate Entertainment. It featured guest spots from Dorinda Clark-Cole, Tye Tribbett, and Mary Mary.
In 2010, Maurice Robinson, Jamal Parris, Spencer LeGrande, and Anthony Flagg made accusations against Long, stating that he used his influence to coerce them into sexual relations. The cases were settled in 2011 out of court.
When asked about the reasons he has chosen to settle the cases, Long responded: ”I had to make the decision to save me, save my family and save the church.”
Wife
In 1981, Long married his first wife, Dabara S. Houston.
The couple divorced in 1985.
In the divorce papers, she accused him of abuse. Houston also said she was afraid of Long’s “violent and vicious temper.”
Long denied all of Dabara’s allegations.
In 1990, Bishop Eddie Long married Vanessa Griffin, a Columbus, Georgia native.
During the peak of the sex scandal, Griffin filed for divorce following ”a great deal of deliberation and prayer.” Vanessa also stated: ”It is my sincere hope that this matter can be resolved expeditiously, harmoniously, and fairly.”
About 24 hours later, Griffin has changed her mind. ”I love my husband. I believe in him and admire his strength and courage,” she said in another statement.
Children
Long has a son (Edward Long) with his first wife. With Vanessa, he has three children named Taylor, Jared, and Eric.

Death
Long died in Georgia on January 15, 2017.
The cause of death was an aggressive form of cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Vanessa Long, children Taylor, Jared, Eric, and Edward, and three grandchildren.
Prior to his death, Bishop Long said: ”I am recovering from a health challenge that I trust God to deliver me from.”
First Lady Elder Vanessa Long declared: ”I am confident through my belief in God that my husband is now resting in a better place.”
After Long’s death, Bishop Stephen A. Davis succeded Bishop Eddie L. Long as the new pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga. After 16 months on the job, Bishop Stephen A. Davis announced his resignation.
Later, Pastor Jamal Bryant was selected as the pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. Bryant was married to Gizelle Bryant.

My thoughts to your question is this.. whatever his sexuality was or his health condition was is not our business. And I’m not trying to be rude or anything of the sort. So i will say this.. as long as what he read and preached matched what’s in the Bible then I wouldn’t be concerned about anything else. I don’t believe everything that people says because majority of the hearsay is botched anyways. Always keep this in mind “People can’t take you to Heaven but they can help you get to hell”. God tells us not judge for he is the only Judge. God Bless🙏🏽
