The company went digital around 2007 with the help of a fan who wanted to access Dave’s product after he moved to New York City.
In 2013, he had planned to run for Mayor of Boston.
In January 2016, The Chernin Group purchased 51 percent of Barstool Sports for $10 – $15 million.
”This was not my cash-out moment,” Portnoy said at the time. ”This was our best shot to literally take this thing to the moon.”
The acquisition was overseen by Mike Kerns, Chernin Group’s president of digital.
In April 2016, Barstool Sports moved to the entire third floor of the 11-story office building between Broadway and Fifth Avenue.
On July 19, 2016, Erika Nardini was announced as the CEO of Barstool Sports. From January 2013 to December 2014, Nardini served as the chief marketing officer of AOL.
One Bite Pizza Reviews
On January 9, 2019, Portnoy started the YouTube channel ”One Bite Pizza Reviews.” The majority of the videos present Dave as he travels to various pizza restaurants across the US and eats a slice.

”I started in Boston, and then I moved to New York a couple of years ago and decided I’d eat every slice in Manhattan,” he explained.
In January 2020, Penn National bought a 36 percent equity stake in Barstool Sports for $163 million, in a deal that valued Barstool at $450 million. Penn National has the option to acquire another 14 percent stake via warrants three years after the deal.
”They have the infrastructure,” Portnoy declared. ”We have this rabid audience, this fanbase craving it.”
The Chernin Group remained with a 36% interest in the company.
In April 2020, Portnoy started a personal feud with the former executive vice president of HBO Sports, Peter Nelson. The controversy started after Nelson allegedly advised Sofia Franklyn and Alexandra Cooper (co-hosts of Call Her Daddy podcast, at the time) to ask for a significant raise.
Note – Call Her Daddy was bought by Barstool Sports in 2018. Also in 2018, Barstool bought ”BizNasty Does BC,” a podcast created by Paul Bissonnette and Pasha Eshghi.
In July 2020, he interviewed Donald Trump at the White House.
In October 2020, Dave and Josh Richards started the weekly podcast ”BFFs with Dave Portnoy and Josh Richards.”
