Nelson replaced Ken Hershman, who resigned as head of HBO Sports in October 2015. ”I am particularly proud of what I accomplished and believe now is the perfect time to hand over the reins to someone new,” Ken said at the time.
As the executive vice president of HBO Sports, Peter was involved in bringing on the network of a two-part documentary on Muhammad Ali that was directed by Antoine Fuqua and executive produced by Maverick Carter and LeBron James.
”Our mission is to tell the best stories in sports, and boxing is welcomed in that,” Nelson said.
HBO Getting Out Of The Boxing Business

In September 2018, HBO announced its decision to leave the boxing business at the end of 2018.
”This is not a subjective decision,” Peter explained. He added: ”Our audience research informs us that boxing is no longer a determinant factor for subscribing to HBO.”
”I think the sport has done very well without HBO,” said Larry Merchant, a longtime commentator for HBO Sports, in 2019 for Boxing Scene. ”It’s having a terrific run now of big fights (with) ESPN, Fox, and DAZN.”
In 2019, Peter was named by Sports Business Journal to its 40 Under 40 list.
In May 2019, HBO Sports acquired the streaming and television rights to the documentary “Diego Maradona,” which was executive produced by Asif Kapadia.
”Diego Maradona has long been considered the greatest footballer ever,” Nelson said in a press release. He went on to say: ”Asif Kapadia’s filmmaking perfectly captures every high and low of his transcendent career, from his controversial ‘Hand of God’ goal to his awakening of Napoli, and more.”

In August 2020, it was reported that Nelson left his position as the executive vice president of HBO Sports.
His departure is thought of as a reflection of HBO Sports’ declining importance in the overall structure of the network.
According to reports, he has left the company ‘on his own terms.’
