At the age of 18, she was involved in a car accident that left her paralyzed and bling for 10 months.
She was told that she would not be able to see again and then the damage that the cerebral hemorrhage had caused was irreversible.
It was during this time that Winger decided that if she were to recover, she would move to California and pursue an acting career.
Winger did end up recovering from her accident, and upon moving to California, she booked her first role in the 1976 film ‘Slumber Party ’57.’
After that, she played a few minor roles in TV shows and film productions until 1978. She landed her first major role in the film ‘Thank God It’s Friday.’
Her next film ‘Urban Cowboy,’ starring Winger alongside John Travolta, brought her first BAFTA nomination, as well as a couple of Golden Globe nominations.
This was to be the start of a decade in which Winger would receive a lot for her film work.
Academy Award Nominations
Her first Academy Award Nomination came two years later when she starred in the film ‘An Officer and A Gentleman,’ and her second nomination came one year later for the movie ‘Terms of Endearment’ in 1983.

It was in 1995 when Winger took her first break from acting.

Husband
When it comes to her personal life, Winger has had a few different well-known relationships, the most notable of which was her marriage to actor Timothy Hutton in 1986.
The marriage ended in divorce in 1990, but the couple did have a son, Noah Hutton, who was born in 1987 and is a documentary filmmaker.
Six years after her first marriage ended in divorce, Winger married the actor and director Arliss Howard.
The two met while filming Wilder Napalm and got married in 1996.
This made Winger the stepmother of Arliss’s son from a previous marriage, Sam Howard.
A year after their wedding, Winger gave birth to their son Gideon Babe Ruth Howard, who is commonly known as Babe.
The couple has been married ever since, and Winger has even starred in many of Arliss’s films throughout the years.
