Debra Winger is an American actress who found great success in the 1980s when she starred in many critically acclaimed films.
The Origin Story
She was born on May 16th of 1955, in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, into an Orthodox Jewish Family.
Her father, Robert, was a meatpacker, while her mother, Ruth, worked as an office manager.
Her Jewish upbringing brought her close to the Israeli cause, and in some of her interviews, she had mention volunteering on an Israeli kibbutz and even training with the Israeli Defense Forces.
These were statements that she retracted in 2008, and as such, it is unclear whether Winger did, in fact, volunteer in a kibbutz or if she simply visited one.
At the age of 18, she was involved in a car accident that left her paralyzed and bling for 10 months.
She was told that she would not be able to see again and then the damage that the cerebral hemorrhage had caused was irreversible.
It was during this time that Winger decided that if she were to recover, she would move to California and pursue an acting career.
Winger did end up recovering from her accident, and upon moving to California, she booked her first role in the 1976 film ‘Slumber Party ’57.’
After that, she played a few minor roles in TV shows and film productions until 1978. She landed her first major role in the film ‘Thank God It’s Friday.’
Her next film ‘Urban Cowboy,’ starring Winger alongside John Travolta, brought her first BAFTA nomination, as well as a couple of Golden Globe nominations.
This was to be the start of a decade in which Winger would receive a lot for her film work.
Academy Award Nominations
Her first Academy Award Nomination came two years later when she starred in the film ‘An Officer and A Gentleman,’ and her second nomination came one year later for the movie ‘Terms of Endearment’ in 1983.
While Winger received many nominations and a lot of recognition for her performances, she also started to develop a reputation for being difficult to work with.
It was in 1995 when Winger took her first break from acting.
The actress has often referred back to this period and commented on how she wanted to quit, and so she did for a period of 6 years.
This period was also marked by the creation of the critically acclaimed documentary ‘Searching for Debra Winger,’ which was created by Rosanna Arquette.
The documentary was released in 2002 after Winger’s return to acting.
Since her return, Winger has been a part of many different movie productions and tv shows, and she has even earned an Emmy nomination for her role in the film ‘Dawn Anna’ in 2005.
Outside of acting, she has also been the co-executive producer of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Gasland.
She also was the executive producer of a 2012 documentary by the name of Bel Borba Aqui, which was a biographic piece about Bel Borba.
In her many years of having an active career, Winger has also pursued things outside of the film industry.
During her break in the 1990s, she spent a semester as a teaching fellow at Harvard University.
She also wrote a book title ‘Undiscovered’ which is based on her own recollections and discusses the reconciliation of the Israeli Jews and Arabs.

The marriage ended in divorce in 1990, but the couple did have a son, Noah Hutton, who was born in 1987 and is a documentary filmmaker.
Six years after her first marriage ended in divorce, Winger married the actor and director Arliss Howard.
The two met while filming Wilder Napalm and got married in 1996.
This made Winger the stepmother of Arliss’s son from a previous marriage, Sam Howard.
A year after their wedding, Winger gave birth to their son Gideon Babe Ruth Howard, who is commonly known as Babe.
The couple has been married ever since, and Winger has even starred in many of Arliss’s films throughout the years.
