With his strong physique, most of Córdova’s fans think he must have been an athlete at some point—and they’d be right.
Throughout elementary, middle school, and high school, Ismael was sports-mad.
Córdova explained that, as a teen, he knew he was going to get a scholarship.
The plan was to get the scholarship, study pediatrics, and become a doctor—the ultimate dream for many parents. But then he discovered drama club.
Córdova was a member of his school’s drama club, which he credits with captivating him and helping him to feel more “heard and empowered than ever.”
He had always loved writing poetry for the creative outlet, and because he was “a very shy kid”—but acting was a totally different beast.
By the time Ismael Cruz was fifteen years old, he had already been bitten by the acting bug.
To make a little pocket money while he was in high school in Aguas Buenas, he worked in local commercials, small TV shows, and a couple of films.
The Importance of Family

While Ismael may be single and ready to mingle in 2022, he has made no secret of the importance he places in family.
In an Instagram shout out to his sister in August of 2022, he celebrated her pregnancy and the fact he is due to be an uncle any day now.
He also celebrated Christmas of 2021 early when his abuela—that’s his grandma—came to town.
The pair posted pics with Bacardi cocktails in hand and the hashtag #AbuelaApproved.
Ismael also took to Instagram to wish all the “mother figures” out there a happy mother’s day—and to have a talk about how mother figures can take different forms in our lives.
A Little Bump in the Road
Ismael may have had a dream, but the road to greatness isn’t always a smooth one.
After high school, Córdova applied to 13 acting schools—and each one expected him to travel to campus for an audition.
He didn’t have the money for that, and when he explained the situation, he was given a pretty harsh reality check.
“I basically received 13 letters of “que pena, bye.”
In a remarkable twist of fate, the 14th letter was a winner: Ismael won a scholarship within Puerto Rico that included $1,000 cash and two return airfares—it was off to New York City he went.
In 2006, Ismael packed up his Puerto Rican life and headed to the Big Apple.
He enrolled as a transfer student at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts later that year.
That Big Break

In 2022, Ismael Cruz got his biggest break so far when he was cast in Amazon’s iconic—and insanely expensive—The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Hitting screens on Amazon and Prime Video in September of 2022, the show sees Ismael join forces with Morfydd Clark, Owain Arthur, Robert Aramayo, Charlie Vickers, and Joseph Mawle to create one of the most anticipated series of the year.
The series—which is set thousands of years before The Hobbit and the OG LOTR—is set to be a wild ride.
