Biography
He was born on October 28, 1974, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as Joaquin Rafael Bottom, to Arlyn “Heart” Bottom (née Dunetz) and John Lee Bottom.
His parents were missionaries in a millenarian Christian religious cult called the Children of God. They became disillusioned and left in 1977 after discovering abusive practices like “flirty fishing.”
“It was really innocent on my parents’ part,” Joaquin later said about his parents. “They really believed. People bring up Children of God and there’s always something vaguely accusatory about it.”
After leaving the cult, the Phoenix family settled first in Florida. They later moved to California.
His parents divorced in the 1990s.
