Marie Yovanovitch is an American diplomat and former US Ambassador to Ukraine.

Biography

She was born on November 11, 1958, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

In the 40s, her parents emigrated to Canada, where she was born. ”Like so many in Europe in the 1940s, including those in the Ukrainian American community, my parents survived poverty, war, and displacement,” Marie told NPR in December 2019.

Her parents emigrated to the United States when Marie was a toddler. ”They finally arrived in the United States, with me in tow, in search of freedom, accountability, and opportunity,” she said.

In 1976, she graduated from the Kent School in Connecticut.

In 1980, Marie earned a BA in history and Russian studies from Princeton University.

In 1986, she joined the US Foreign Service.

In 2001, Yovanovitch received an MS from the National Defense University’s National War College.

From 2003 to 2004, she served as the Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

In 2004, Yovanovitch was named ambassador to Kyrgyzstan. She remained in this post until February 2008.

From August 4, 2008, to June 9, 2011, she served as the US Ambassador to Armenia — one of the largest embassy compounds in the world. Later, she was appointed the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.

In 2016, Yovanovitch was appointed ambassador to Ukraine by President Barack Obama.

In early 2019, Marie was recalled from her post after a smear campaign by Rudy Giuliani and other associates.

In November 2019, she testified during the impeachment inquiry against President Trump.

On January 31, 2020, it was announced that Yovanovitch has retired from the State Department.

In December 2020, Yovanovitch received the PEN/Benenson Courage Award.

”She is a powerful exemplar of the kind of courage this award is meant to honor,” stated Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PEN America. The award was previously won by student activists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida and Anita Hill.
